People set up huge goals like for example; lose x amount of weight, wake up at 5 every morning, take a cold shower every day etc.
But they fail with their goals because they fail to realize that to stick with something, you need a really strong reason that outweighs the option of quitting.
If your ultimate goal is abstract and doesn't have a profound, personal meaning to you - you won't endure what's required to reach it!
I didn't start working out, until I became super interested in stoicism, and working out became the way to associate with my new self. Before this I had tried working out a few times, but always giving up after a few days. This is what most people do. They hear that something is good for them, set a huge goal, and quickly fall short because it didn't feel worth the sacrifice.
After I fell in love with stoicism and started working out, I practically didn't miss a day for the next 3 years. I sacrificed a lot to workout basically every evening. But I had a certainty that I wouldn't give up because I knew how much it mattered to me.
Could you wake up 04:30 tomorrow morning? Yeah you likely could, but you would likely snooze and sleep for a few more hours.
It doesn't matter to you.
To me, it is my edge. It is the space where I can work in silence towards who I want to be. I have a personal reason as to why I do it.
If you don't have that, you won't do it. You won't consistently choose to endure suffering for something you don't care about.
This is why trying to live a lifestyle that any external person preaches is worthless. It doesn't really matter to you, and you won't stick with it.
Being consistent and disciplined is easy if the goal actually matters to you.
If something doesn't really matter to you, you won't have a reason to do the incredibly difficult things required to achieve it.
Discipline is simple, and easy if it matters to you.
Can you wake up at 5 every morning?
"No"
Do you want 2 extra hours of time with your early-rising kids every single day?
"Of course".
Are you willing to go to bed earlier and wake up earlier for that?
"Of course"
Anyone can achieve anything, if it matters to them. If they have a strong reason to.
