Db Backups

To all the guru's, what are your thoughts on backing up databases for your sites.

Is SSH really necessary and more reliable? Does the MySql "full backup" really timeout and often lead to error upon uploading/restoring?

I have used both, more Mysql than SSH and never had a problem with either. This is also on a small scale, so would this change if, say, I was backing up a board site like fastlane with 200k members and a boatload of info?
