data storage question

Ok, I have tons of pictures of my family and I want to have them stored in case of a fire or something. I have been using external hard drives since I can grab them and run anythime I want. The problem is technology chages so quick that the hard drive becomes obsolete. I have one that only goes up to Win 98 and another that only goes up to Win Vista ( which I currently run) I don't even know what to do with the hard drive then runs on Win 98 since nobody even uses that op system anymore. I guess hold on to it or take it apart so nobody has access to my photo's when I trash it. So what do I do about storage. I know I can store files on line for a fee which I would like to avoid. Any suggestions? Maybe a fastlane product can come from this
