My wife and I are building our dream house out in the middle of nowhere. Last night some losers went in and stole the electrical wiring out of the walls. The insurance will most likely cover the extra materials and labor required to fix it, but it's set our schedule back at least two more weeks. They were supposed to start hanging drywall this week, but obviously can't now until the wiring is replaced.
This has really upset us since we're very anxious to get moved in. The house is already behind schedule due to excessive rain early on, and it seems like our entire lives are on hold waiting for it to be finished. It sucks knowing you're going to be moving soon but not knowing the exact date, or even the exact month when it will happen.
I'm hoping that some of you with real estate and construction experience can recommend ways for us to beef up security and prevent this from happening in the future. Short of camping out in the house with a shotgun (which I'm strongly considering) what other precautions can I take?
The new house is an hour drive from where we currently live and work, so it's time consuming to swing by and check up on it. There's a barbed wire fence around the entire 25 acre plot, and a padlocked gate where the driveway meets the road. The gate was locked when the theft happened, so apparently they parked somewhere and walked in. The house isn't completely locked up yet, some doors are missing. That might be just as well since they could have just kicked in a door or broken a window causing more damage. There aren't really any neighbors close enough to see anything happening at the house. There are some sort of close enough to see our driveway entrance on the road if they're really paying attention.
Any suggestions or ideas would be great.
