Hey everyone. 1st insider's post!
I've got a progress thread going on the outside for my online art school, which is coming along, but I wanted to bounce this idea off of you guys, especially those with experience in the supplement biz.
I am a kidney stone sufferer. I had my first one when I was age 10. It was 11mm wide, and I had to have lithotripsy done, which breaks the stone up. This procedure cost about $7k in 1992 and is probably insanely expensive now, plus you still have to pass all the stone fragments. The remaining fragments stay in the kidney to become seed crystals for later. Kidney stones have about an 85% return rate after lithotripsy. It also did damage to my kidney resulting in several small, supposedly harmless, cysts which I have now.
I had another one last year. I went in to my kung fu class one day and just couldn't move. My teacher asked me what was wrong, and I told him I had a kidney stone (4mm this time). He gave me an old herbal formula, which is kind of obscure, even in Chinese Medicine circles. I drank the formula in a tea 3 times every day, and after about 2 weeks, I felt a chunk of the stone break off, move into my bladder, and dissolve there (I felt nothing pass through my urethra). After about 6 weeks total, I had no more pain, and my doc couldn't find anything on the x-rays.
I'd like to bring this formula to a wider audience because kidney stones suck.
1.4 million people in the US get a kidney stone every year. I figure that even a small percentage of those people could make a pretty decent size market. Apparently a few thousand of those people die from them, too.
Logistics necessary:
Find a high quality, preferably American supplier of the necessary herbs.
Send the herbs to have them put in tea bags and packaged, then shipped to me. I figure I can start with some online-only sales and hopefully a small qty of units.
Develop a simple website and do some ppc to see what happens.
Get my chemist friend to synthesize a calcium/oxalate stone and make a video of the formula being pumped over it, resulting in its dissolution.
Figure out legalities of supplements.
Etc., etc.
