Best way to validate a need for a product?

I have been looking at the Chinese wholesaler Alibaba and have stumbled upon a few products that I feel may sell well. However, this is just a hunch as I have no data to suggest people will buy these products. What would you suggest I do to test the need for these products? Should I purchase a few and try to sell them on ebay?

Ultimately, when I find a product that the market wants, I would like to set up a website and sell it. Perhaps I will even go down the path of branding these products and establishing my own brand, but I am getting ahead of myself. Before I take a risk and purchase a whole bunch of merchandise, what should I do to see if people are actually interested in the product?
