Keeping this short because I need sleep and have to get up at 4am (in 3 hours) to work another brutal day. Hard work will pay off.
Anyway, yesterday I sat on the curb and ate lunch with a homeless man.
We talked for a good half an hour, he had plenty of interesting stories to tell, and he wasn't psychotic or any of the other stereotypes that are often associated to the homeless.
Worst part about being homeless he said? 'Everyone treats you like you don't exist'. And this is true I noticed. I work/my office (sounds weird to say lol) is in one of the wealthiest areas of the city (directly adjacent to the most exclusive area in the entire city (median household incomes exceed $800,000... over a population of 2,500... a lot of wealth in that area). Anyway, I'm sitting there on the curb, in my dress shirt, tie, etc and everyone is completely ignoring us, like we're not even there. No one engaged eye contact nothing... meanwhile every few seconds a ferrari or a porsche would zoom by and everyone would instantly snap out of their zombie state to stare at them in awe.
Anyway, point is, try to be nice to people. It doesn't cost much (or nothing at all even). I paid $10 for the lunch, had a nice conversation and both of our days (mine and the homeless man.. Gary was his name) were improved because of it.
I also told some friends/family about the incident and the support has been overwhelming. Such a simple act can generate so much good, and it gave me a boost of confidence and happiness among all the rest.
One of my friends went out the next day (today.. or technically yesterday) and did the same after hearing about my experience. That made me feel so great, I can't even describe it.
Have a nice sleep.. hopefully longer than my 3 hours!
