The last decades I knew many students, who looked for a job.
And I actively helped or tried to help them to get a job using my connections and my know how as an ingenier.

When asking for interviews at big businesses or public offices, they often got tasks to solve, which were so spacious, that I found it outrageou. More because these employers never gave the aspirants a job.
I found out, that often different candidatesgot different tasks to solve.

That seems a way to save costs and let fresh absolvents work for free.

aside:

The last year I spent much time in this forum and my view on things changed a little. No, changed far.
So someday I told the job aspirants to solf the task in the best way they could do and offer the result to that business for a special amount of money.
Not to the job manager, but to the business in general.
And they sold it .
And they did cold calls ( which is forbidden in Germany, but there are always possibilities) and sold it several times.
One had a software problem to solve and now offers it as a saas.

So, if you want a point to start, just apply to jobs offered in the noche you want to go. You will be told needs and you can solf them.
Business!

I have heard from a couple guys in software that they were basically scammed by an extensive interview process into developing software for the company for free (under the guise of a coding challenge), and then not given a job. Then they discovered their work being used in production (not sure how). Basically you are describing flipping the tables. I like your thinking.

Ah yes, free consulting. It happens to the best of us even though I teach how to recognize and avoid it. I have plenty of stories of vendors, in order to “win” the business, describe in detail their solution allowing the buyer to do it themselves. In each, there was no business to win. It was the buyers request to learn how to do the project without paying for it.
