I played this awhile ago, the speed of your computer affects the speed of the game. I played on three different ones, and it was different on all three.

Tip to show off to your friends- save it to play offfline, hack the html and slow down the blocks considerably. Then show them a screen shot after you get like 3 minutes.

I remember seeing this on Digg a while back. Back then there was a line along with the instructions saying that fighter pilots have been known to score better than 60 seconds. You also used to be able to submit and have your own score ranked. But yeah - annoyingly addictive is right!
