Hello all,
My name is Roger Lum and have been a passive entrepreneur for the last 18 years and an active Entrepreneur for the last 3.
What the heck do I mean by that?
Well ever since I was a kid I have been hustling. From selling sodas on the golf course, painting house numbers on curbs, selling glow sticks at the local fire works show on the 4th of July, and numerous other non-passive revenue streams. (I even won a few county wide awards in high school in the area of entrepreneurialism).
The reason that I consider that being a passive entrepreneur is:
a. There was no real sense or urgency or fear that went along with my endeavors.
b. They were more done to make money then to offer value
c. I didn't think business was possible to be scalable
Recently I have started to face the realities of being an entrepreneur in the real world. Some things I have found:
1. You gotta eat.
2. A real business must pay taxes
3. Value is the key to wealth
4. Competition will try to destroy you...so you better destroy them.
5. Most importantly, it can be fun and a lot of work at the same time.
How did I get to this point?
After high school I thought it was time to end my entrepreneurial endeavors. Time to start REAL business learning. I went into UCLA for business economics and joined a business fraternity prepping myself for the "real world " of business. I said to myself "Time to start getting realistic about what business really means". I ended up graduating ready to be another COG in the business world. After a few corporate jobs and hating the idea of "employment" I felt depressed about the idea of my next 50 years. What I didn't realize is that a few tweaks of some of my childhood impulses and instincts I could make business work for me.
1. Read books from people that have done it
2. Surround yourself from people that are doing it.
3. Get mentored by people that do it well.
Where I am at:
Now I am a 28 year old "active" Entrepreneur. I am a equity partner for a pre $1 million dollar revenue e-commerce company and I am focused on my fast lane to millions!
My biggest realization up to this point:
It's true what they say, don't follow the impulses of your childhood to choose what occupation you should be(4 hour work week). But at the same time, some of those impulses are really instincts to our destinies. After some retrospective, I was destined to be an entrepreneur...now it's just an issue of gaining the right skills to be successful.
Do it, Do it now, Do it right now!
A struggling entrepreneur.
