Usually movies are worse than the book. You couldn't pay me to sit through that. The book stole a few hours from my life and there's no way in hell I'd go through that again. Fool me once...

This book is proof that being a good writer is not what sells a book. It's marketing, getting people to talk about your book with others, right genre at the right time, book cover, etc. Fiction writers pay attention: writing well alone will not sell your book, though you should try to write much better than this turd of a book.

What I think made this book sell are two things: the writer was able to somehow tap into the collective subconscious mind of females around the world. The other factor is women really want to belong and relate to each other more than males (males are more into one-uping each other, challenging each other, being different, etc.), so once the book was read by a certain number of females, the others had to read it too for fear that they would be left out of the conversation. Men typically don't go home and read a new hit book because all the guys are talking about it. I could be wrong about these things, but I don't think I am.

I think what sold the book was the pent-up bad girl factor of its readers. 18 – somethings to 50 -somethings that are coming to realize there's a little bit more out there than the standard missionary position. When I owned my Christian bookstores, some of the best-selling titles were Christian sex books especially to online, anonymous mail order customers. I think the book tied perfectly into an emerging awakening. The book single-handedly increased sex toys sales across the country.

I couldn't bring myself to read more than 10 pages if that - it was horrible - but can't knock her empire building skills…she now has wine, pleasure kits, board game, this movie which has no well known actors in it. It's amazing!

I read the first and I totally agree: the reason this book sells so well is not the author`s writing skills ;-) ! I always thought it was because I`m a woman and had enough of sex after the first two chapters.......but now I am feeling relieved since there seem to be men that don´t like it as well.
Still, I wish I wrote that damn book and owned a sex toy shop at the same time :) :)

Whether you agree or not, the writing is superb. A must read for authors looking to hone craft.

Yeah, he's good for sure. I nosed through his blog and beyond the above average writing skill, many of his posts are polarizing, meaning you are forced to either love him or hate him. This happens to work very well in popular culture, and probably has something to do with why 50 Shades has done so well. The worst thing you can do as a writer is to get no reaction out of people, or keep them on the fence. Good find, reminds me that I need to make my writing more edgy. When people are polarized, they are way more likely to talk about you, and both positive and negative view points benefit you. The idea is to get people talking.

I think these movies are going to be a big hit.
Everyone wants to hate on the series. I don't care how horribly written, no storyline, etc...
Women everywhere ate it up.

Like someone told me... Men want naked women and women want a fantasy.

Every woman in work and even my wife read this book, the wife read all 3 and said it wasnt great at the end

A good title and lots of hype really does work, also helps that the title and picture wasnt the typical romance looking womens sex book.
