Monday I was fired and this is what I have learned
1. The only security you have is with yourself.
In the Netherlands we have a basic rule: In the first month, it's a try-out for both parties. This means, you can be fired at any time within the first month. I had a 6 month contract. This means, after the first month I am guaranteed for another 5 months to have a job.
It's 4 months later now, and they fired me. I will be payed for another 2 months but I am without a job. I learned valueable lessons during the four months I worked there. I grew as a professional. The only security I have is with myself. I am responsible for building my skill. I am responsible for making decisions.
I did my utter best but simply couldn't hack it, which brings me to the second lesson;
2. You are better of giving your 100% and fail then not have tried at all
I was ambitious. I did not have much work experience. I did not have sales experience. I got hired for a job as a recruiter where I needed to develop my own business from scratch. The job is hard, 70 hours a week is normal.
I was surrounded by great sales people. All kinds of tricks on the phone would book them meetings, they would get requirements in those meetings and book some more meetings by networking while being on those meetings. I was struggling. I did gave 100%. I picked up tips from my co-workers and booked more and more meetings. When people told me to stand up during my conversations, I did. When people told me to ask a certain question, I would try.
It wasn't enough but I don't feel ashamed anymore. I know I gave it 100% and did my utter best to deliver.
3. Self reflection is crucial
In the end, you need to trust yourself and have a realistic view of where you are and where you want to go. Without goals, you will try all kinds of directions. You will achieve, but you might not achieve what you wanted to. Without knowing where you are, you will never know where you need to grow as a professional.
You need to understand your own value system. If your value system is all about money, then embrace it and go surround yourself in a world where the same value system applies. Find your value system and find your place in the world where this value system is most needed.
I will find another job, because for now, I first want to crush the slowlane. I want to gain confidence which is a bit at a low point at this moment. I want to build uppon my own strength and character. The only security I have is with myself. I can't rely on others to "make it rain". At the end of the day, I need to ask myself: Did I become stronger or weaker today?
I have been home for 2 days so far and I feel I am getting stronger. It's like fitness. You need rest days to get back stronger.
