Love this thread, and the speech. I've had experiences that were slightly different, which are mirrored by the comments below. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one.
It's how you handle the mundane things that create the person you are so you can handle the big things. I *really* like the circus analogy. Been there way too many times. I've never looked at it that way, though. This insight is particularly helpful. Wish I would have heard it a long long time ago though - I could have used it way back when when I was wondering "why is this sheet happening?"

I learned of a whole new world in the first 3 months of service. It would have been nice to have a role model and mentor like @jon.a found. Or to have found the teamwork and camaraderie from the article. What I found was that it was me against a world of people that wanted to intimidate me into submission. Although not an innocent teenager when the training commenced, I came out with a new found and jaded view of the world that served me well in my life.
That supervisor that calls you out in front of a group, expecting to intimidate you like he does the others-look at him dead in the eyes and respond with an even calmer voice than you normally have. Works wonders
