Hey guys I could use your help:
I'm the #1 Final Expense life insurance salesperson at my company — but I don't own an asset. Trying to decide whether to walk away and build one. Want the group's read.
For several years I've been the top Final Expense producer here, still one of the best in the country. The founders have been incredibly good to me, and it's a special place — flexible carrier, high comp, strong renewals, great culture.
The problem: I don't own anything sellable. We are discouraged from doing our own paid advertising, so I don't even own the client relationships. After years at the top, what I've really built is a very high-paid job, not equity.
So I want to build an actual asset — stay in the senior/insurance world but own the customer and do higher ticket (retirement products). Go direct-to-consumer on annuities (simple to issue, high ticket), then layer in other products in the future everything those clients need over time: Medicare and eventually asset management and other insurance for their kids. Own the acquisition engine and the relationships, and build something I could sell one day for a real multiple. On paper it's a more efficient path to my $3M/year goal.
The catch: different market, different sales process, and a skill I don't have yet — profitable direct-response advertising. And leaving the people who built me up feels like betrayal.
Where I'm stuck: my wife and I are planning to get pregnant soon. Final Expense pays the bills now, so part of me wants to keep running the field agency *and* build the annuity business on the side. But the agency is brand new (even though I've sold full-time for 5 years), and we just survived a toxic partner getting terminated by the carrier. I worry doing both means being mediocre at both.
Two questions for the group:
1. Am I wrong to leave people who helped me this much to chase a bigger goal?
2. Am I naive to think I can build an annuity company using paid advertising and upsells into a multi-product, sellable asset — or is this exactly the swing to take *now*, before the kid arrives?
