Hi everyone. I'm Laurane, 31, freelancer for 6 years, based in France. I have a lot of free time and flexibility thanks to my freelance work, but it's not f*ck you freedom and I'm determined to get there.
I reached the "I can't live like this anymore" some years ago and then proceeded to waste a solid chunk of time doing every dumb thing possible: picking businesses for the wrong reasons, never committing fully to one idea, over-planning instead of going in front of actual customers. Every mistake in the book, I made it.
So now I'm in this weird place. On one hand, I'm getting more and more frustrated at myself because I fully KNOW what I should be doing and yet I'm not quite there in execution. On the other hand, my brain is way less stupid about business than it was a few years ago. And I think that's exactly what makes it so maddening: you see things more clearly and you're still not where you should be.
Anyway, here's the thing I'll focus on in the next months and years.
The idea I kept coming back to for 4 years
I've always been into learning languages, I'm the kind of person who thinks it's nice to learn a language in their free time. And something kept bugging me every single time I started a new one: absolute beginner resources are crap.
Once you reach an intermediate level (A2-B1), you're fine. Duolingo, YouTube, podcasts, it all works because you have the foundation. But going from absolute zero to A2? That's very hard, and the people who produce languages resources are LAZY to make something interesting for this level (well, because it's super difficult). It's a shame because this stage is very fragile, from a learner perspective: your brain fries in minutes, everything feels like a nightmare, you're very prone to dropping.
What I'm making
I'm working on a show for French learners (it's my mother tongue, so I start with French). An actual series with seasons, story arcs, recurring characters, etc. Flat 2D animation (think South Park). I do everything myself. If you watch all the seasons, you should go from A0 to A2. I've always dreamt of a show that would be for adults, and that would assume you speak 0 word of the language. For me it's like replicating your experience as a child: you're thrown into this life, you know nothing, and then slowly because you're surrounded by people you speak to you slowly, point things at you, repeat, etc., it clicks. The main character doesn't speak a word of French.
My end goal is to make it almost impossible for people NOT to learn the language, and in the most effortless way: you just watch the episodes like you watch a Netflix show. I really think it's possible, even though it demands a lot of work and thoughts.
Where I'm at
Producing the first episodes of season 1 right now. I plan to publish the first episodes on Youtube, ask feedback from Reddit mostly, iterate based on their feedback, produce more episodes, repeat. Season 1 would be for free on Youtube. I'd focus on collecting emails in the first stage. Then there would be a platform where you can have access to all the episodes, for a yearly subscription.
That's it for my introduction. I'm very happy to be part of this forum! I look forward to reading your stories
