This is a lie you keep selling yourself.
Nobody reads anymore?
OR listens to audiobooks?
In Choose Hard, I call this limiting belief a solution prison
Yes. I can see it now.
Certain markets are indeed dying but I didn't know that children's books have been steadily growing. And current trends (parents not wanting kids to use screens, schools in certain countries going back to paper over screens, social media bans for kids) indicate this trend won't slow down.
And it's funny because I talked about this repeatedly this year with my French teacher (who raises her kids without screens) and even recently with @Fox. I also have direct experience watching my four nephews grow up (so far, slightly) addicted to screens.
If you go in the children's book route, may I suggest repositioning Amazon as simply a channel, one of many.
Try marketing. Don't rely 100% on Amazon.
Use your multi-language powers.
Maybe even take an animal welfare front on those books, that either subtly promotes veganism, or outright pushes for it. The latter will likely ruffle feathers, but aren't some ruffled feathers better than none?
This leverages your knowledge in publishing, and even touches your global passion for animal welfare and nature
Yes, Amazon will be my starting channel and my scaling tool. I'll design it as a source feeding my list so I can be in touch with my buyers and eventually sell books in bundles (because selling one book directly doesn't make much sense but a nice bundle does).
The multi-language aspect is one of the unique advantages I have. I'll translate every book into several languages and will have extra distribution that very few authors have. These foreign markets also have cheaper ads and there's less competition there. Out of my current income, often more than 50% comes from non-US markets.
As for the angle, my plan is to address the "I don't want my kids to spend time on screens" problem and focus on solving this primarily through making kids fall in love with wilderness (not just chasing butterflies in grandma's garden but actually living adventures in the wild with their parents).
Veganism is a possible angle as well. But I'm not sure it lends as well to multiple books and the market is likely much smaller and super tiny in certain foreign markets (so my language advantage wouldn't help that much).
