But I also get that the more unvaxinated, unquarantined people run around, the more likely it is that our hospitals fill up, potentially causing rationing of essential services.

By and large I get what you are saying but the changing narrative is where I feel the the resistance really came in. First the vaccine push was to stop the spread. Then it was admitted that they don’t stop the spread. So logically ones only reason for getting it was to prevent themselves from getting sick, which means it should be a personal decision, period. Now the narrative is similar to what you said above, “get vaxinated to reduce loads at hospitals.” The problem I have with that is that COVID while a contributing factor is not the sole reason for diminished hospital capacity. In AZ currently only ~5% of hospital visits are for COVID like illness and ICU beds are ~70% filled already for other reasons. Why aren’t we banning Coke from people with diabetes, or McDonalds from people with heart disease? Less obesity and heat disease would also reduce hospital admission, right? Like @MoneyDoc said and alluded to, the US (and other countries) have dozens of very solvable health issues, why is this vaccine the only thing being pushed?

It’s a little weird how quickly it’s escalating from “we recommend it” to “we demand you get it because of A, no because of B, actually because of C, definitely get it because C.” Anecdotal story here but our local country club recently sent us an email letting us now that we could be assured if we saw an unmasked employee that they were vaxinated. How would we know? They are to wear bracelets signaling their status and those without bracelets must be masked. We resigned the next day.

So when your area is experiencing an outbreak, please do your best to not spread it.

Completely agree. Wash your hands and if you’re sick then stay home. Common sense stuff we’ve done for a long time. Again though, that messaging has been replaced by “get the shot!”

From where I sit, neither side has an monopoly on the truth

Also agree. Though my opinion is that only one side has the eyes and ears of 90% of people and that side has made those people believe they indeed have the monopoly and you’re a conspiracy theorist if you dare question it.

At the end of the day, I believe this forum is full of people willing to see both sides more often than not and then make an educated decision based on that. It only seems like an echo chamber because that critical thought is the antithesis of how society operates.

The communications are really just bad.
I know very few people who actually think the vaccine itself is totally fake, useless, etc.

The real issue for *that side* is how much government control we allow, and how much freedom we give up.

The other side’s main concern is safety and health. But they are less concerned about the legal and political measures that are taken.

That side says things like “if it saves just one life, it is worth it.”

Those two sides won’t see eye to eye. And nobody can pretend that they are unbiased.
—-
oh, add to both sides the fact that none of the people arguing have any first hand knowledge on this stuff. It’s all second hand, scraped together from family, friends, and media companies.

(actually that might be third hand?)

anyway, forcing it on people through whatever means is more like a dictatorship than any kind of America I want to live in.

Worse yet, once a person makes a decision on which “side” they choose, they start looking to confirm that opinion and stop listening. It becomes “us” vs “them”. That’s why the two sides won’t agree.

But that’s normal in a free society! Imagine yourself in a dictatorship, there is only the one side…

Yup, arguing is good, it means we are free.

In China there is only one political party. Elections? What elections?

Part of why I engage in this from time to time, even though it feels like I am beating my head against a proverbial wall, is because I really do want to get better at this type of difficult communication.
Yup. I like observing how we think, communicate, overcome obstacles or build walls.

So when I saw this:
And what do we call people who believe they should enjoy unfettered freedom at any cost, free of any consequences?

Teenagers, that's what.

Lastly, if your best reason for not getting a VAXCClNE is simply "I don't wanna", well, sorry, but you might be selfish. Self centered? Self focused? A teenager?
I just knew you'd push the wrong buttons.
Can you see the crash about to happen in slo-mo? ;)

BTW you can see a similar effect with Dr. Stock challenging masks, vaccines etc. at Mt. Vernon Community Schools in that now-deleted video someone posted.

Stock said many important things. Like not being able to make the virus go away. Masks not really protecting well (but let's acknowledge that masks limit sneezing and spitting at others lol). Questioning school policies related to constant testing and mask mandates for kids (or closing schools). The uncertainty around benefits of vaxxination if you're already immune due to past infection etc. Kudos to him for standing up and challenging the Milgram experiment narrative on record (imagine the pressure).

Unfortunately, he also made a few strange or incorrect statements. For example, that more % of vaxxed than % of unvaxxed get infected (we've seen the opposite with over 3x more % unvaxxed getting infected) and that it's the evidence for ADE (far stretched). Or when he "proves" ivermectin and a few other drugs are effective and better than vaxx because he's given them to 15(!) people and they're fine now (sooo.... they'd be dead if he didn't?).

Of course, each side will focus on different parts of his speech and have different takeaways. He challenged the official safety measures, so the safety crowd immediately jumped at his shaky arguments. He highlighted the importance of freedom and challenged the narrative, and the liberty crowd claps and makes it go viral (when I received it as an argument against vax I rolled my eyes).

One side's reaction triggers the other one even more... It escalates and in the current climate, what's more anti-establishment/anti-vax gets blocked.

To be honest, I don't know what I'd do myself if half of my electorate believed in quackery and my bad will and the other half sheepishly panicked every time something moved in the bush... lol

Well, at least here at TFLF, even if on average there's a bit too much doomposting for my taste, you're not blocked for your opinions and we can challenge each other.

Thanks for the safe space, MJ!

I remember someone told me that if you're dealing with someone who is going through a funk for reasons like they lost their job, got demoted, etc, one thing that you can do to help them is ask them for advice.

Sometimes the issue is that people don't feel like they're contributing anything.

The US is not any different as far as political parties go. We live under a one party system that utilizes the delusion of a two party system to divide and conquer. The true and singular party is the state.

Sure there are a handful of outliers that get elected, but they really don’t have any influence. The very few that have existed usually come and go quickly, and most end up whacked.

Ron Paul is an outlier’s outlier. A true statesman who was never taken out, at least in a physical sense.

Agreed about Dr. Paul (he delivered many of the babies down here).

He was so unknown though that they didn’t care much about him.

Trump was an outlier too. Or should I say, outsider. We saw a massive orchestrated effort to paint him in the worst light possible.

Granted, the man had no tact and said some crazy stuff occasionally, but overall, the media went after him like hyenas.

By replying to @thechosen1 post with mention of China, are you really saying the USA is the same as China? Hope I’m misreading your post, or you are smoking something strong brother. Pass it along.

The US is the same as China in the sense that both countries have a one party political system.

China is open about it, while here in the US we pretend that it doesn’t exist.

Hmmm… I’m not buying this.

The very fact that you as a nation (I’m not American) were able to elect Trump and then elect Biden tells me no, you are nothing like China where there is one leader for an indefinite (read “forever as long as he wants to”) time. Xi has the power, he is the party and so on. The limit on his power was removed in 2018.

So no…

Also, if you ever do travel to China (and I enjoyed every trip), you’ll notice that internet is not the same. You can’t access your Google email or Facebook pages or Twitter. Any website or Forum for that matter, that doesn’t conform to what the party (at the direction of Xi) thinks is acceptable, won’t be tolerated and will be shut down. You and I might not be able to debate topics like this over there.

I hear your point of view on GOP/Dems at times being close together on views but don’t share the sentiment.

I used to have an ecommerce company and I got used to being able to ship things so unbelievably easily. I had all the software, but it just isn't justified now.

I discovered something called "Pirate Ship" recently, and I really love it. It is a free account that you can print USPS labels. Works for me.

Anyone else tempted to Yolo on Alibaba stock at this point? I’m not going to, but I’m sure I’ll look back on this post in a year and wish I had the balls.

Any time I feel this way, I buy one share.

I have done this on a few “bets” like this and it’s fun to see the % gained over time, lol.

I’m not talking about “leaders,” who aren’t even leaders in any sense of the word.

I’m talking about political parties. There is no difference between the Republicans and the Democrats, save a literal handful of good men who have come and gone.

The Democrats go in big with a “progressive” agenda, and the Republicans offer phony opposition. The US has never been ruled solely by Democrats, yet here today we find America speeding down the road to a failed state. It takes two to tango as they say.

Trump is possibly the worst thing to happen to this country. Not that he is responsible, but the media used his polarity to divide the country further, as they always do, and Washington DC ran the ball into the end zone. Trump was the best thing to ever happen for the Marxists.

Simple factual note: If a company ever uses the words "Better" (Better Mortgage) or "Honest" (Honest Electricians) in their name, they are anything but better or honest, actually expect the exact opposite: Worst and dishonest.
