Edit: This whole thread is an unstructured brain dump - you've been warned.
"Knowledge is power."
For those unfamiliar with the phrase Data as a Service, or DaaS for short, this boils down to selling data. People pay for data that solves business problems, like market research or just getting the emails and phone numbers of potential clients. MJ's limo lead service was an early data as a service model. Data is the new oil, or something like that.
Key point to be said early and repeated often: marketing >>>>>> technology. You will make more money with an average product and great marketing than the other way around. Ideally do both, but marketing is more important.
This post will be all over the place and I'll clean it up later, because I was more interested in starting to post about what I've been up to over the last few months (and I'm still figuring out now).
I cheated with starting this model because I am very good friends with a software engineer who did free work for me, but I'll share what I've picked up along the way. I am a data analyst, which means that I'm an analyst with self-taught programming skills. My coding philosophy is "I don't care if it's good code or if I even understand it - I just care if it works", so if you're looking to this thread for insights on how to code, look elsewhere.
You don't need to get that creative with this model - you can copy existing models, and improve upon things in terms of user experience, data quality, or just by adding a few fields.
The beauty of software is that you can get incredible resources for free thanks to open-sourced projects. Look up things like Google Tesseract OCR (optical character recognition - AKA extracting text from images) and mySQL for some great tools that you can get for free.
Getting Started
Either start with a data set that you know people are willing to pay for but can't easily use or just copy some existing model like selling doctor's emails. Look up companies like Data Axle - helping businesses make money through data, technology, & services or ZoomInfo: B2B Database | Business Leads & Company Contacts for ideas.
Next, you'll want to buy a domain name that people will visit your website through. Just use name cheap.
You're going to need a domain name - buy one from name cheap.
You will need a server or something similar to host this on. While Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure are great for their wealth of tools and for their ability to scale, they are priced according to how much you use them, so if you have thousands of people using your services, they charge you a lot (nice problem to have!). Both Amazon and Microsoft will wave fees if you mess up your design and get unexpected large bills, but while you figure out how your product will work, it is nice to have a server with a flat annual cost. I rent servers with SSDNodes because you can get great servers for very little money.
Cheap Hosting: SSD Nodes | VPS Cloud Hosting For Hundreds Less
Cheap Domains: Buy domain name - Cheap domain names from $1.37 - Namecheap
I'll write more on this tomorrow because I have a bunch of things to do, but I wanted to get this started.
