I respectfully disagree. As other folks pointed out, chat dilutes valuable information with senseless noise.

Here is a community united by substance, not medium or app. It does make sense though to create it for newbies and channel noise like "wat shud I do wiz my life while I'm playin gamez" there.
I think that was the point they made early on, get the people who want to spew the same stuff every day to start on discord and the introduction forum. It possibly would lower the countless threads that ask the same question. @FauxPas as for more incentive for INSIDERS subscription there isn't need. The threads alone and INSIDERS calls for you to read and listen is enough, imo, and a progress thread would get more focused interaction. If you want a way to talk directly to the big boys, they all have personal messages turned off for a reason so a discord server would not help here.

Pro discord stance: For general chat, an intro guide to using the forums and the answer to all the questions that get repeated it could be good. Maybe a flowchart like this.Screenshot_20201022-094531_Chrome.jpg
Side note: Why can someone post right away without being cleared? Force us to do an introduction, comment "read" in the 1-2 threads that have all the links to useful threads to read, etc. This would stop a lot of initial noise and not terrible requirements from the moderators before being approved to start your own thread.

I believe MJ spells out the process for engaging in the beginning on the forum. Newbies are parked until they hit certain milestones. IDK what the solution would be for recurring questions that already have answers, or the answers vary according to the personal situation. Maybe @MJ DeMarco can look at some AI bot to detect the recurring and tiring questions, and then send a message instructing the poster to either clarify the question or prompts them to search the forum more effectively, because that question has already been answered.

Or, we just let it be. The core group seems to be pretty good at governance.

I m active in forums since about 20 years and seen chatrooms coming and going. Never staying. They are useless and unused in the end.

Just my experience.

I was an active member of a gun forum years ago. They had a chat function on the home page. It was used mostly for just horsing around.

Was kind of fun.

I would NOT want to take it off the site though.

If I remember that last time we had chat, it wasn't actual "chats" but drive-by posts...

Spam, affiliate links, random "hellos", and "hey everyones" ... very rarely would there be a chat, at least not in real time. I've also looked for other active forums (like this) with chat enabled and wasn't able to find one.

I enjoy Discord more for the custom emotes, voice chat rooms, displaying your PC real-time, and a great way to represent various communities. I think its better to keep things contained on this forum alone. Many have mentioned already that other media will split the community up and it would be better to get the traffic just here.

I don't want to take content away from the forum. But there has shown some interest

I'm against chat.
The only use of discord i had was when i needed one liner answer.

The real problem is that in chat you have to have all people in one room at same time
to have meaningful discussion. And since many FLF users are spread around the world (and timezones), they would not be able to contribute.

Asking for advice and having answer from many point views would be based on chance.

(Its getting long but i'll throw it just in case)

The thing about chat vs (this)forum is also about uniqueness of knowledge and experience.

When you talk in cooking chat, there's plenty of people who know same recipes.

Here, sometimes just one or two people know the answer.
Having them online at same time you chat, would be very hard.

Ok, that's all.
