Im currently going through a 32 hour web development course i purchased on Udemy to improve my coding skills and eventually be able to code a full website, however i do realise this is going to take months and months of hard work and i want to start getting money in now, would it be wise of me to still focus on this course and learn when i can, but also learn WordPress effectively as i have heard a lot of people say WordPress is the way to go if you're starting out?

Do you want to sell your skills as a Web Designer? If not, and you're just doing it to build your own website (to start your new venture you mentioned in your other thread) then hands down I would jack it in and use Wordpress to build just enough web presence to test your business idea.

If you want to code for a living, or want to do something off-piste, then crack on. In terms of building a website from scratch for yourself using code, but for the purposes of having an online store-front, it's an interesting hobby, but action-faking in terms of a step towards money making for a business. It's like wasting hours and dropping big money on a logo as a first step. Just don't.

Aren't you thinking wrong about it?

If you want to earn money now, it's the wrong mindset to start with.
You could, if you get lucky, use wordpress without writing any code yourself.
There are enough posts that are about that you only have to create value with what you do, but there is much other stuff you need to do as a web developer and you'll have to grow your portfolio before someone would even pay for your work. (If you don't have friends or family that need it.)
Learn actual programming... you have to walk hand in hand with modern technology and trends and not being able to code would hinder you greatly in that matter.

Depends very much on your goals.

What are they? Tell us a bit about yourself.

This makes sense, just seen a lot of people advise for beginners to use wordpress, i'm interesting in coding and want to become a web developer so i'm just going to have to be patient and not earn money from it for a while i suppose.

My goals is to work from home and make a very solid income online, which is why i have chosen to go down the route of web development, i'm going to venture into shopify soon as well, i don't have much money to my name at the moment which is why i'm very pressed on making money now (which may not be a good thing). I know if i stick with coding and web development in a couple years time i will be able to make it a full time job if i work hard at it, but for the meantime i want to be making money, hence why i'm curious about WordPress, although it seems like cheating to me, people have said it's a good avenue to make money now.

Your goals are a bit unclear to me so i'll lay it out like this:

If you want to build a website for yourself: This can be easily done without knowing any code. You can whip up something really great using just WordPress themes.

If you want to build websites for others: You can also build/sell websites to others strictly using themes, however knowing a bit of front-end web dev will help to build custom features and take your business to the next level. Php will be really helpful with wordpress.

OR you can choose to learn actual Web Development/Software development and then you will be able to build custom websites & web-apps.

I'm approaching a year in my journey learning software development (self-taught). Feel free to reach out if you have any questions

Well yeah, do what you think will keep you learning and experimenting.
If just coding is not pragmatic enough for you and you want to get your feets wet, learn using wordpress.
But don't specialize in it completely - you'll learn coding in any way or another if you hit the wall of wordpress's possibilities.

Honestly, if you're slightly technical you can start building websites for others now just using wordpress themes and learning coding as you go. I know a few people who are making decent money just selling & building wordpress theme sites.

I haven't worked on any software projects for people yet as i'm still learning, but i've built quite a few websites for people.

I dont know what you mean by wordpress being cheating.
Is building furniture cheating if you are not carpenter?
Is selling produce cheating if you are not a farmer?

Why not use the fastest route to your goal?
There are many many ways to make a solid income online, have a browse of the GOLD threads in the forum.
Doesnt mean you shouldnt become a software dev, just dont get distracted from your goal.

I dont really know who to ask so im going to ask you, say you build a site for someone for free or a very low price starting out just to build up your portfolio, who pays for the hosting and domain for that website? would it be the client or would you pay for it and charge him?

Depends in lots of cases, but mostly the client would have their own domain & hosting. Your job is to design and build a website for them that can help them reach their goals (More sales, more appointments, etc).

Ok and as a web developer (I’m really new to this sorry) is your role more than just making the website? Do you have to market the website manage the website etc etc ? Thanks for the replies

I'm probably not the best person to ask these type of questions. Website Creation / Design isn't really my thing. There are companies that will build the website for you, keep it updated/manage it, and do your marketing. I say at your stage you should focus on one thing (probably designing/building websites).

Yeah i've watched a few of Fox's youtube videos, they explained my problems quite well, companies can just pay you extra if they need the stuff i talked about. Im going to try and improve my marketing skills as i think thats also very important in terms of bringing in clients

It's best to learn Wordpress because you'll also be learning PHP and Javascript once you start to customize it by writing your own plugins and themes.

Wordpress is very powerful and you can build pretty much any kind of website with it.
