I started an online business about a month ago. The long-term vision is to have it become a social platform. It's a minimal viable product (MVP). We are trying to launch as soon as we can. I believe that before we launch, we first need to create buzz, and creating a social media presence. What is the best way to do so?

I honestly have no idea where to start, and what number would be a good number to have (for followers on Instagram, for example). I assume we should start with instagram and facebook and aim for at least 10 thousand followers before our launch so that we at least have some sort of an audience the day we launch.

Another option is running ads. I have no idea where to start with this either.

Any ideas or thoughts?

Best regards,

Coming from a place of having an author platform @280,000 YouTube subscribers and being able to successfully launch a book and some other projects, here's what I'd suggest for your situation:
  • Before considering creating buzz, I'd ask if you've verified whether your social platform is something people want?
    • Posting a mockup of your platform on ProductHunt.com could be a good idea
    • A reddit post
    • Speaking on a 1-on-1 call with 10 people of the target audience you have in mind and asking for their brutally raw thoughts
  • Once you know that, I'd consider tapping into an influencer or someone else with a platform and trusted audience already in place. Saves you the grunt work of building up a platform for months or years.
  • The number of followers doesn't really matter. What matters more is whether those followers have interest in your social media platform or not. 500 targeted followers is 20x more valuable than 50,000 followers.
Recently I had someone cold email me with his new e-learning platform. 99% of the time I ignore these emails but he made it so personalized and included my logo and everything in his mockups, showing me how it benefited me, so much that I have a call booked with him.

Going deep on 1-on-1's for feedback with your target avatar I think is one of your best plays.

Hope this helps.
