Hey guys.

I'm Gio from New Jersey. I'm 32, unemployed, I live with my parents, am broke, and have no entrepreneurial experience.

I'm currently learning about copywriting via videos, online articles, and creating a swipe file via Pinterest.

I'm not sure I want to be or can become a good copywriter. It's just something that I've been looking into lately in the hopes of achieving a location independent income so that I could travel and still earn, even if it's only 20k a year.

Normally, I don't have a hustling bone in my body but I'm looking to build some forward momentum in my life. My dream, goal, obsession, has always been to be able to work from home or from wherever I choose to be, and to make my own hours.

I've done pretty much nothing towards achieving this goal except half assed attempts at lofty pipe dreams like fantasy fiction writing. I've awoken out of my inactive daydreamer stupor and decided to get more pragmatic, hence copywriting: it's in demand, and you don't have to spend a decade before you can earn an income.

However, I'm not sure what I'm best suited for genetically or what the best path for me is. I am open to any suggestions and recommendations. I hope to contribute highly to this forum in the future assuming I can get my financial shit together.

You're not a loser! You just haven't found true winning yet!

If you haven't read @MJ DeMarco 's books yet, you must do so!

Hello here from a fellow 30 year old who also lives with his parents, also kinda broke (making less than 400$ a month), and also a creative that doesn't quite find how to live from art.
MJ says it in Unscripted : You don't need to be doing what you were genetically predisposed: Just adding value, helping others, can fulfill you a lot.

Also, any new skill is difficult, but can be very fulfilling to learn, and there's a ton of useful, gold threads in the forum: I knew nothing about creating a youtube channel or SEO a couple weeks ago, but following @Fox's thread (just tagging you to thank you!) I think I've found some good market niches to start.

I'd say first of all find a way to get money, to get out of the "broke" state. Living with your parents gives you a very good advantage here: even with a low paying job, in less than a year you should be able to accumulate 3000-4000$, which is a nice place to start. From then on, learn a lot, and try to start small, to come up with stuff that can be started with no money.

Good luck :)

That's why I was thinking copywriting. I'm under the impression that you can get started with no money. Unless I'm wrong...feel free to correct me if I am. Also, any suggestions on projects that can be started with no money are welcome.

What have you spent most of your free time doing outside of media consumption/gaming?

I suggest reading FU Money by Dan Lok. Your mindset needs some major tweaking!

That's what I spent most of my time doing for the past 12 years. Pathetic, I know.

I'm currently reading The Millionaire Fastlane since I never read it before.

Take it from someone who has been there..consider finding a job and moving out of your parent’s basement. Get uncomfortable so you can light some fire under your a$$. Cus right now you sound like you’re stuck in your comfort zone which may be why you haven’t made any progress..

Also, step 1 is not framing yourself as a loser. From here on out be a winner no matter your current situation.

You're 100% spot on.

The comfort zone issue is the hardest thing for me. I currently find it too difficult to escape. How difficult you might wonder?

I've been unemployed for 9 years. Nine. Years. Since February of 2011. 02/2011.

Yup.

Not good.

Reframing? I might need a restructuring of my entire psyche.

@Tourmaline Do yourself a favour and watch Coffeezilla's latest youtube videos before consuming any of Dan Lok's content. Some really BONE CHILLING STUFF OUT THERE

I've had red flags go off during one of his calls with getting a client before. It doesn't surprise me.

Nor does it matter.

FU Money is excellent for mindset. It parallels MJ while being a bit more curt. Lok's story is also quite inspiring too going from $100k in debt and multiple failed businesses to figuring out how to make it.

Of course like anyone you read or listen to, you should scrutinize what they say and figure out what to keep and discard for yourself. But for OP I think Lok will resonate and may cause him to take some action.

That's what I spent most of my time doing for the past 12 years. Pathetic, I know.

I'm currently reading The Millionaire Fastlane since I never read it before.

We do what we must do. I had nearly two months of game time on a single character in WoW.

Is that pathetic?

I don't think so. It simply is what I needed to do at the time.

I used to keep a list of all the video games I beat. As if that mattered? lol

Now you said most of your time. What else did you do?

If you did only do these things, then look at what you liked to do in these games.

Are you good with people? Like can you make friends easily? Make people laugh? Make them tell you their life story with ease?

Are you a numbers person? Like analyzing data? Like deconstructing systems?

Perhaps it will benefit you to spend some time alone in nature, and reflect on what you really like to do. So you spent time having fun, but you are not unique in that, and now that you are ready to do more, figuring out what you have been inclined to as evidenced by your past and who you really are will help you figure out what to do next.

And be kind to yourself, please!

I have no clue right now. I lack both momentum and motivation. But I am painfully aware and wish to change. Now It's simply about turning my wish into action.

I'm familiar with Dan Lok. It was hid videos that got me thinking about copywriting. I'm also familiar with Dan Pena who's even more curt and no nonsense about success.

But breaking out of my comfort zone is unfortunately going to take more than motivational content. I've watched and read a lot of that over the years.

As far as Lok's legitimacy, anyone who follows Joe Rogan or mma and watches Lok's martial arts contents will know that he's at least part hack. Doesn't mean he doesn't add value though. I feel the same about Grant Cardone.

As far as what I did besides leisure fun, I read novels, watched documentaries, went to the gym, and did a fair bit of creative writing. But these things fall into the leisure category as well to a high degree.

Fantasy fiction writing. Shit centering around plots involving mythical beings and magic. History and science documentaries for inspiration.

Perhaps you found both some skills you have(story telling, creation, writing) and what you're naturally inclined towards given the evidence of your past?

Welcome man.

at 30 I was homeless, unemployed and worth -$40K so there's still hope for you!

Maybe start with the ecommerce biz model since that's a quick way to build a business in the short term and then branch out from there to see how you can build an audience/leverage.

All the best.

I'm not great at writing so props to you for being good at it!

I've been in that same headspace. When I was in school I was bullied heavily, and my family life wasn't great. I had no friends but I found comfort in entrepreneurship and dedicating myself to my goal of moving out of my hometown and buying a house. Despite anxiety, depression, lack of contacts, and lack of entrepreneurial skills (at the start) I managed to reach my goal 5 years ahead of time.

You can do it, you got this! You're only a loser if you believe so, every one told me I was too yet I didn't believe them and things worked out. You can do this. Believe it!

That's one of the true issues. I never said I was good at it. I got way better than when I started at 25 years old but there's no way to tell if I ever got truly good because I never finished anything and therefore never published anything.

I think I was running, trying to distract myself from the misery of my life by losing myself in fantasy worlds.

It didn't work, it just made me bitter. But it allowed me to remain in my comfort zone, where i still am.

I'm turning 40 in a few years time and still live with my parents. I have less than $3.5K USD in my bank as of now. While other guys my age are eating chicks left and right and driving ferraris and bugattis, I've to watch every penny I spent. And even then, I'm still hustling. You can't do worse than me.

I've been given a couple of personality tests. Turns out I like facts and figures and don't care much about other peoples emotions.

There are many of us here that had shitty childhoods.

I grew up the oldest of 4 to a single mother. She was never home and always had the wrong type of guy around. I once broke a jar of peanut butter and it was a financial hardship for us. I was bullied and had a really low self image. I knew that I needed to leave the house to escape. So I joined the military.

I have no clue right now. I lack both momentum and motivation. But I am painfully aware and wish to change. Now It's simply about turning my wish into action.

You can do almost anything if you set your mind to it. A wish isn't going to be enough. You must put your will behind your desires. There is a lot of talk on this forum about action. You have decided to put energy into copywriting.

Work at it every day.

No one is here to see you fail.

I do enjoy personality tests, or at least I used to in the past quite a bit. Of course they can't actually tell you what you should be doing, as they cannot account for how you may change. Plus as one becomes more developed and well rounded, they will typically find more and more that they act out different personality types as the times call for it.

Still if you're looking for decent ones:

This one is good to see your current developmental state:

Both the long and short ones are good.

The Similar Minds all in one test is pretty decent as well:

Though the website seems to be down atm...

Either way, these will not actually tell you what you should be doing. If you wish to know, the answers are within you. They will not come from outside of you. Cliche isn't it?

Not only cliche but unhelpful and frustrating.

I'm not entirely sure I can trust myself.

Unfortunately, I think my inner self is too full og negativity and bullshit to give me any accurate feedback.

yeah...I get it. I spent many years searching for answers everywhere but myself. Turning into myself wasn't even to find answers, it was to explore other stuff that sounded cool.

Funny how things turn out.

Who else are you going to trust but yourself? Even if you trust God, he typically doesn't just tell you what to do directly, rather he tells you through yourself as well!

If you are full of negativity and bullshit, then I ask what are you doing to rid yourself of both?

Perhaps you will benefit from Jordan Peterson's 12 Rules for Life.

I would also ponder when the distrust for yourself began? Was that of your own accord, or out of reaction to someone else's behavior?

Keep in mind that (at least in my country) people have lived in communal family houses since the Roman times. The idea of everyone having their own house is less than 100 years old, and, at least in Spain, imported directly from the 1960s "American Dream" and appearing in an expansive part of the macroeconomic cycle, while now we're in the recessive part.
So the idea of success depends entirely on your country and its culture, religion and economic cycles. Due to the 2008 recession in Spain, many families that lost their jobs have had to go live with their elders and are living entirely from their retirement pension.

Also, your amount of cash isn't necessarily an indicator of your economic health. You could be earning 5000 a month and be 200k in debt and with three kids and probably you'd be far more tied than you are now.

Edit: you could also be in jail, or addicted to drugs or gambling, or having a physical or mental illness that incapacitates you, so there are plenty of worse situations.

As MJ put it, if you're here, in this forum, you're better positioned than most, even if you're in the worst position among the forum members.

My therapist called it the "meat grinder complex", I was being far more judgmental and harsh towards myself than towards others, and this was indeed a form of self-aggression.
