The Poor Man I Cant get a job: Flipping Stuff Log

Not sure about the position you are applying for, but tech companies bring visa workers in to "do the jobs Americans simply cannot do." You know, stuff like math, and technology, and querying a database (something I learned in 3 months). You will see what I am talking about if you walk around downtown Seattle and get a glimpse of Amazon, Microsoft, and other tech companies arguing there are no qualified workers in America. Use the job as a stepping stone (as they will only use you), but you have the right idea to get away from the job market as fast as possible.

Why is the probability of visa workers more qualified than Americans? If you learned that stuff so quick, then I don’t see why people here can’t learn it too?

Because it is a false script they use to replace American workers, lower wages and create longer work weeks. H1b visa workers don't have much of a choice or recourse. I deleted some of that because I did not want to be too negative. I just find it silly that you get so much grief for saying you cannot get a job in this environment. I was there too.

As a side hustle for extra spending money, I flip phones. Buy them on eBay and sell them on Facebook marketplace. I will have made $700 this week in profit. Sold 14 phones @ $50 profit a piece.

I have a book on amazon teaching people this. Its not rocket science.

You must feel confident that you are going to get paid. I tried some of this a got some dicey responses. For example, someone responded to an add of mine and when I went to check them out on FB, they were hiding their face in every photo. Good job making it work.

Ehh...product is easiest if you just import stuff or some low quality stuff. But if yah building something really good and in house like me. I would consider it the hardest part. Going for the highly remarkable so I will not have to spend much on marketing.
LOL. It’s interesting to see... you’re currently driving from garage sale to garage sale looking for toys to flip for $20 profit ....and you’re responding to a guy like @biophase who knows his stuff acting like you know what you’re talking about.

I’m sure your highly remarkable sewn products are going to blow up fast though and you’re going to have to barely do any marketing.

Lol I ended the garage sale thing. Acting like I know what I am talking about? It isn’t acting. A remarkable product still needs exposure. Once exposure starts to targeted demographic, people will share and spread the word. Look at Seth Godin’s Purple Cow. If you saw a purple cow, you would stop and take pictures, share automatically. A purple cow is a remarkable product.

Clearly, you are quite knowledgeable as well. As you can’t look at a comment without bias. Looking at WHO posted the comment rather than looking at the ACTUAL comment.

Update, well everything seemed like it was coming together...but seems like they ghosted me...

Will need to take a lower paying job then, which means it will take me twice as long to build my venture or even get a home if ever.

Sorry to hear that - I know the feeling but keep moving forward and things turn around. Sounds like a platitude but keep you eye on the prize and your goals and don't let anyone or anything distract you, and they will materialize.

Never realized, how brutal this job hunting is. They lead you on saying how good the company is (pretty much bragging about their perks) and then ghost you completely. Happened a dozen times now.

Never realized that location has a significant impact on you getting the job. If you are far away, you are dead last on their choices. Interviewer said, your resume and interview was cool and all, BUT...I will need to choose local candidates first. Also, not having a job for several months makes you look like crap because these Human Resource people are slowlaners. One interviewer kept questioning why I left my last place. Like she assumed I got fired. It just puts everything off to a bad start. You have to fight the biases of the interviewer. Some places wanted me to pretty much get on my knees praising their company.

I wish I never believed the “You don’t need money to build a business.” BS.
You need a lot of money, especially if you want that business to last. Not ones that explode in less than 3 years or some cash out gig.

You need a lot of money, especially if you want that business to last. Not ones that explode in less than 3 years or some cash out gig.

I started my first business with $3.17 and it made a boat load of profit. I started this little flipping business I have right now with $150 and it makes a profit of around $100,000.00 a year. I bought some oil wells from a crack head (nephew' ex wife) for $1500 each! I was involved with a roofer that made GREAT profit and it only cost $8. I could go on and on......

Look for people that have cars for sale. Ask them if you bring them a buyer that pays cash, will they give you $x. If you ask enough times you will find 5 people..... then start putting those cars on every site on the internet and answer those questions as fast as people ask. You might have to text the owner to get the answer but thats ok. And if you can make a video of it running, that will be even better. Put in the ad to message you for a video of the car running. DO NOT put the video in the ad, make them message you. That way you have their info and can message them back later. See, money maker and costs $0. There are even some car dealers that will do this deal, if you ask enough. If a person puts in 2 hours and asks 3 people, prolly not going to get good results. Results will come with man hours put in to doing this.

I have just read through your thread. One year later matie, and still no Job? ? Ever seen 'Fools and Horses' Dell Boy? :hilarious:

This post might read like I am shitting on you. I am a bit ;), but I promise it is not a personal attack.
When you read though this, please imagine you wrote this to yourself and try not to get defensive. I only wanna help.

Further, I am Design Manager (with a Mechanical Engineering education) with 10 years experience leading teams of engineers on multi-million euro design projects. I am constantly hiring and managing contractors to lead and design a portfolio of high spec products. If you want me to have a look at your CV/resume and covering/introduction letter I am happy to take the time and give you feedback on how & where to tweek it.

Have you truly truly asked yourself, from a 'money in the bank' and an experience point of view, "Would I have done better just getting a job in Starbucks or doing some free-lance work?" . At least then you would have been in a better position to ask and identify needs through real external experience and engagement.

@MJ DeMarco with a few hundred dollars?
Agreed but MJ also had a real job(s), gained understanding through working experience, and was exposing himself to identifying needs.

You are aiming for some pretty technical jobs eh (Engineering IT etc.)?
Assuming you are fully qualified for these position that you are applying for, after one year of failure it is seriously seriously time to take a hard look at yourself and your attitude.

You are not getting these jobs because (in order of likelihood):
  1. your not qualified on paper for the position (over confident) - overshooting
  2. your level of experience is too low for the position (delusional) - overshooting
  3. Incorrectly selling yourself * - misfiring/mis-aiming
  4. 'Flipping' experience is irrelevant to any technical job (a joke) - shooting oneself in the foot
  5. Your attitude towards work stinks &/or they simply do not like you - shooting ones self in the head
* Tip: Leave your 'Entrepreneurial ego' at the door or at the very least apply it to their business. Companies want good old "scripted-people" (i.e. happy work 9-5, giving there all until the are 70, or drop dead at 65 (#pensionPotWinning), with no dreams of running off after a year with better ideas)

I am not saying these things to be mean or start a discussion, only to help you with questions to ask yourself during a period of self reflection.

Seriously mate, no job after one year is a absolute joke.
If you cannot approach a technical company without before doing your homework
(i.e. identifying the companies needs & ambitions for the future),
then identifying how you can bring value,
(i.e. with your current skill set & portfolio)
and then, in the interview, Sell Sell Sell yourself with a healthy mix of humbleness and confidence (and bullshitting),
then how the F*ck do you expect make it in a successful business of your own?

Getting a job is the easy part, side walkers have been doing it for years. I am surrounded mostly by idiot project managers here, how the F*ck they got the job without a healthy dose of bullshit and overselling themselves I have no idea.

Get smart, get sharp, get focused and F*cking hustle!

Good luck amigo!

If you cant make without money then you likely wont make money with money either.

Started my first real business at 16 with less than 10 bucks. Ended up making a ton of money from it.

Former clients of mine just sold their business for seven figures and moved to Hawaii. They started their business with almost no money.

What you lack in money you have to make up for in resourcefulness and hustle.

Dude, just say some white lies about the things that don't matter. If you think you can do the job, and do a good job at that, then say what the interviewer wants to hear. Don't lie about anything significant that will impact your performance, but the little things that put the interviewer at ease.

"Where do you live?"
"I live an hour and a half away, however I'm planning to move right down the street if I get this job. I have two friends that live five minutes away, so it'd be a nice area to move to."

"Why's there a gap in your resume?"
"A friend of mine convinced me to leave my last job to help him in his startup. I wanted to try it since I'm young to see if I liked it, but it turns out that I don't. Running a business isn't for me. There's too much stress with the things that I'm not good at like marketing. Instead, I came to realize that I just want to do something like electrical engineering (or whatever your job is) and do the best that I can. Working hard to do a good job and eventually get promotions is better for me than running a business. It just wasn't for me."

Say things like that.

Figure out what they want to hear. Then say it in an appropriate way.

You need a lot of money, especially if you want that business to last. Not ones that explode in less than 3 years or some cash out gig.

Just change your resume address so you are local for every job.

The reason why location matters is because they don’t want to pay to move you. Also you can mention that you are not looking for a relocation package and that you were already planning to move there anyway.

They are ghosting you because they don’t want to hire you. You are doing something wrong somewhere.

The rest of the stuff you said is all limiting beliefs.

what part of the country are you in?
what type of job are you wanting?
what are your qualifications?

what is your method for finding jobs and then letting them know you are interested, available, and fit everything they have ever wanted?
what efforts have you made other than 'sending a resume / applying online'?

put up a chart by week on the wall ....... jobs applied, contacts made for potential jobs, phone interviews, face to face / skype interviews, no's with a why, offers

hustle, look for patterns, keep putting irons in the fire

You've got to accept that many of the processes you have to go through in this world are just nonsense, arbitrary barriers designed by irrelevant people, that stand between you and your goals.

Almost the entire HR profession, and much of the legal and compliance profession is comprised of self-important people doing make-work jobs that exist to make life difficult for people that are trying to do things and build things.

See this as a learning experience. Learning to read what people want and then give it to them, so you can get where you need to go.

I went through a drought when I first wanted to move to TX. Every resume I sent out with my real Midwestern address went straight to the trash. I started using the address of a UPS store in a strip mall in Dallas, and started getting callbacks. The ability to tell people what they want to hear about materially irrelevant details can open doors in life on an almost supernatural level.

So to summarize, and correct me if I’m misreading all this, your field of engineering is so specific and you are so good at it that you think random internet strangers who can probably only name 50 of the world’s 2,200 billionaires will somehow be able to identify you? Yet, you can’t even get a callback for a job in that field?

What am I missing here? Does your resume say “at night I dress up as a bat and fight crime”? Because then we can identify you. (And you should remove that) If not, we can’t, nor does anybody here care to try. They all want to help you and are still trying despite your best efforts to thwart them.

Have you taken @ZCP up on his offer to view your resume? Do you know what field he is in? Have you ever considered the possibility that if he saw your resume he might know somebody or some company that could use your services? Maybe he can, maybe he can’t but what’s the harm in trying? Lastly, who cares if they can identify you and you know each other’s names?? It’s called networking and it’s the most valuable thing you can do in business and in life.

Did think about doing this, but what happens if they call me in for interview? I am on other side of country. Pay for plane ticket for only a chance?

$500 for the chance to make $60k...wouldn't that be a nice problem for you to have?

There is a difference how I view online presence. If you haven't noticed, I don't ever want my name associated with this account. I use the internet to post anonymously. I don't use this account for "networking." If I were to network, I would make an entirely new username.

$500 is a chance. Not guaranteed. If I flew out to every interview I had, I would be down several thousand by now.

are you this negative and off putting of advice in your job interviews?

Lol, no not at all. This is just my internet postings.

So the reality is that I have a healthcare degree. Not an engineering degree. Generally people in the entrepreneur circles tend to say you don't need a degree and you can learn everything you need from Youtube videos and/or online courses. Guess not. Went back over a few positions I applied for and was also immediately rejected by all of them.

The reality is nobody takes you seriously if you learn off Youtube or some online course. They hold no weight.

Lots of entrepreneurs like to thrash that degrees are worthless. But society as a whole and companies still value degrees. They don't even look at you if you don't have one in related field.

Everything is a trade off. I only have enough money to do one at a time. I want to:
Go back to school ($40k) for a piece of paper
Develop my products ($???k)
Rent out a Home ($20-30k)

So why are you focusing on developing a product that will cost you xxx dollars when you have no job and are eating roadkill to survive? First thing should be a job any job man anything anything is better than nothing.

Because I want to bring value to the marketplace. Before I started running out of cash, I ended up showing my target demographic a prototype of the product. I have been getting non-stop organic traffic ever since.

But yeah...you right. I applied to all jobs in my area reducing the location barrier.

By the way, can't even afford roadkill. Haven't eaten in like 3 days. :inpain:

For the love of God landfill this thread.

It’s not landfill material. Here’s why.

1. Other ppl who are similar to the OP also have many of his limiting beliefs/excuses. We’re reading the thread and subtly siding with his excuses.

2. The reason they’re limiting BELIEFS is because we actually believe them. (I’m saying “we” because I know I shared at least one of his excuses earlier this year.

3. Every time somebody replies to the OP those of us with limiting beliefs have little aha! moments where we go “Holy crap. Really? Who knew? Huh. Maybe I need to rethink my ideas about _____.”

4. It’s easier for us to see him being an idiot and judge him than it is to admit our own crap BUT just by reading this thread some of us might be reaching out to the amazing human beings who are being INCREDIBLY F*ckING patient with him and asking them for help. (I know I did.) Several of the guys trying to help him are currently now helping me once a week or so with my crap.

5. Real change in the heart of a person takes faith. Real faith comes from hearing. (Or in this case reading, lol) Most ppl really don’t believe they can be successful. I’d assume that at least 20-50 ppl or more are reading this thread and getting TONS of encouragement from it.

6. Save one life, you save the world.

7. This thread is revealing the character, kindness, and patience of successful men who are taking their time to try and help the OP. If we want to be wealthy like them it makes sense to also try to emulate their character, writing style, and realistic outlook on life.

8. I would have called him an idiot and walked away a LONG time ago. I also tend to expect ppl to not want to “waste” their time fighting my limiting beliefs. This thread is confronting that belief, in spades.

9. He might actually change.

@Timmy C what if i had shown the same level of frustration w/ you? apply what you have learned. see if you can get @MoreValue shepherded in a positive direction.

threads like this are awesome. they help countless people.

do you have any idea how many people i have gotten to help and mentor after they read the dumpster fire of @Ericito 's one thread?

want to help people? publicly help someone that won't listen and cannot get out of their own way. it wakes up a lot of people!

Did think about doing this, but what happens if they call me in for interview? I am on other side of country. Pay for plane ticket for only a chance?

That's what I used to do. But normally they do a phone interview first.

And I'm going to add that all my friends did this to get jobs. I had friends time vacations to coincide with interviews.

Back in the old days, I had to put a Cali area code on my resume because there weren't cell phones yet. So I couldn't have a Chicago phone number. I had to use my friends number in LA to put on my resume.

Then I'd schedule the interview 2-3 weeks out using excuses on why I couldn't come in tomorrow.

Maybe you are losing out to others that try harder during the interview process.
