Tattooing your face is how most of those soundcloud rappers stood out.<br />
<br />
Take 6ix9ine for example. He started out as a complete joke. People listened to him to make fun of him: his ridiculous hair, teeth, face tattoos, videos on social media... They didn't like his music, just laughed at him. Then, at some point, he hit such critical mass that he attracted a good enough producer and put out a hit or two, and suddenly people went from thinking he was a complete joke to questioning if they liked his music. Now, he's arguably top 10 in terms of rapper popularity.<br />

The souncloud rappers started a cultural movement, and because of that, other want to be rappers started doing the same - tattooing their face for attention.<br />
<br />
It's like Lady Gaga with her outfits, Nicki Minaj with her butt, The Weekend with his crazy hair... almost everyone has their schtick since not only do you need good music, but to be memorable (brandable).<br />
<br />
Now what's hilarious is that all these idiots are getting face tattoos. Anyone that has rap ambitions is considering it. So, the market has changed from "standing out" to it being the norm. Idiots with no chance of a musical future are ruining their faces because they see it as a correlation to success.<br />
<br />
I think the dumbest tattoo I've heard of so far is some no-name that got an Anne Frank tattoo.<br />

I very much agree with you aside from your implication that all these artists are on a similar level of talent (or lack thereof).<br />

6ix 9ine did gain traction from shock value, but the guy is talented as hell, he deserves to be top 10.<br />

I think most of the hate directed at him comes from prejudice over his physical appearance, or quite simply juvenoia.<br />
<br />
His vocals drip with intensity to such a point that you almost can't help but be swept up in the energy of the song.<br />
<br />
His lyrics are mindless trash; pure violence and sex. Extremely graphic, yet oddly moreish. <br />
<br />
Take a look at this snippet from the song Billy:<br />

It's unlike anything I've heard before, there's a real animalistic vibe to his music that I personally can't get enough of.<br />

I think he's gonna be top 10 for a good while, and production ain't got nothing to do with it.</div>
