Hello

Having studied countless success books, audios, videos, etc. etc. one key point that comes up time and time again is to 'be very careful who you spend time with' (or quotes and messages along those lines). The point being is that if you spend time with 'slowlaners' or 'sidewalkers' to use MJ's terms, you will yourself become just like those people.

Alternatively, we all know that if you spend your time with other successful, ambitious 'fastlaners' then this will enhance your progression in so many ways.

So the bottom line being: Avoid spending time with 99.5% of people you ever meet, spend time with 0.5% of people you meet. Ditch close friends, be selective on time spent with certain family members and seek to meet people who share the same values and beliefs when it comes to success.

While some people may struggle with this concept - I absolutely agree with it and I have no problem in being ruthless when it comes to who I choose to spend my valuable time with.

So, if there is anyone else reading this who can relate but is perhaps struggling to find the 0.5% out there, feel free to comment on this thread and share ideas etc. I am based in UK and currently involved in 5 projects/business ventures. Despite a hectic schedule, if anyone knows any decent Networking events, I'd be more than happy to find time to meet like-minded individuals. I live in an area where ambition just isn't in peoples' vocabulary, so I would welcome the opportunity to share my ideas and help others, while also gaining insight to how others are operating on the path to success.

Best of luck with your journey.

Nathan

Hi Nathan. Interesting thoughts and author Tim Ferriss says you become the average of the five people you hang out with most ( I think he says that) Anyway I have to disagree with the sentiment.
I like to mix with all sorts of people and start conversations to get peoples thoughts and maybe even let them get things off their chest/mind. It gives you ideas you may not have thought of and you hear problems that need solving which can be good for business ideas.
Hope it's not too cold over there buddy.

Wrong. That is being snobbish.

The first lesson to learn in any business is that people don't HAVE to do business with you. The second lesson to learn is that people do business with people they like.

Go ahead and be ruthless. I guess that throws out the networking, sphere of influence, and branding techniques that are so often employed in developing a business. But you do seek out "decent" networking events? Ok then. Good luck breaking into that.

You're in business now, of some sort. That entitles you to be... entitled? Sure sounds like it to me. I've had a few bosses like you, had being the key word there.

Hi Tommo
Good to hear your view point. I don't feel there is a right or wrong answer to this...what works for one person may not work for another. I agree it's good to get different perspectives. However I do think that all of these world-famous authors and public speakers haven't got to where they got by not taking notice of this idea.

You're missing my point.

If you are a highly ambitious person, do you really think it is a good use of your precious time to hang out with people who believe and preach that 'all rich people are greedy, and property landlords should have their houses taken off them to provide housing for the unemployed'???
I firmly believe if you are around people with this mentality, it will eventually rub off and halt any progress you have made. It just can't be a good use of your time, (if you value time of course.)
Me personally, I prefer to spend time with people who want to make a big difference for the world, to start organizations to help humanity or the planet, to create innovative business and to provide value. You think this is an entitled attitude...but I employ over 100 people from different walks of life. That's a lot of money that my businesses are providing to individuals and families who then spend their money in their communities and in small businesses etc.
Take the test, go ahead. When was the last time you met a lazy unemployed benefits scrounger with an income of less than £10k a year who's 4 closest friends were billionaires? No, the likelihood is the 4 best friends are also stuck in their 'take take take' mentality, and their conversations will be about how landlords are greedy, the government doesn't do anything for them and the only way to get rich is by winning a scratchcard.

I think we are talking about two different things here. Potential customers or people who can spark ideas in us and on the other side the negative influencers, life sucking types or Bloviators is a term I picked up in a book you will be familiar with.
Picking who you mix with on a personal level is different to potential clients who only want a solution.
Keep smiling guys.

I don't know about you but my life is not only about business and becoming a bilionaire. People I spend time with are a mix of sidewalkers, slowlaners and fastlaners ( yeah I am friends with people who think money is evil and rich people are scum ). When I talk about sports with someone, it doesn't matter what they think about property taxes and online marketing. I think its also a good thing to hear different opinions so you can make your own. Now if I want advice about business, I'm gonna ask people here or fastlaners I know.

This is the exact topic where I am torn, but fortunately I don't need to make the final decision.

I habe friends who have been there for me in tough times.
Not involved in a way I owe them something, but yes in a way I feel more bonding is due.

It's like the worst kind of friendship..

even tried to share with them my point of view of unscripted life, and they are merely a common action faking, all-talk-no-walk average minded, "dog on a nail" (best described by MJ's example) - people.

I believe any doubt I used to have, I just solved it with this paragraph.

It's great and all that they feel connected to me, but it's more "depended" than "connection".

They complain and whine, but never act - it's exhausting to hear and I dread meeting them...

I agree with the statement of "filtering" your own close friends circle - mainly in a mental way.

Conflicts, dissagreements, stubbornness and negativity
VS
Debates, different prespective, ambition, curious and support

The difference is huge.

Fair enough, I think you make a good point about listening to other opinions. It's always going to come down to the individual and their standards in life. I set my standards for life ridiculously high, I don't care how or why, I just do. There's clearly more than 1 way to achieve big success, I guess my way is by taking a tunnel vision approach and being obsessed with reaching my goals. I'm all in, it's either all or nothing, so watching sports etc. just isn't something I will do while I'm so committed to my big life goals. In a few years, I'll have all the time in world to drink beer and watch sports, travel, etc. etc....but right now the entrepreneur lifestyle is where I'm at.
Best of Luck.
