So here I am with the idea that spawned from working on what I originally called "Visual Twitter Idea" which you can see at this link https://www.thefastlaneforum.com/community/threads/visual-twitter-idea-in-the-works.51879/.
The major providers of mapping/geocoding services are Google, Bing, Yahoo, and Mapquest, most other geocoding/mapping providers are just resellers for one of 4 major companies. Mapquest is who I was using for my projects since they very openly push the fact that they use open source data to serve their data.
After about 5 days of testing in which I sent in around 20k geocoding requests for my GedMap project at http://www.gedmap.com I get an email from Mapquest that starts off with "Our legal department has determined that your community key is being used for a commercial product and you will need to purchase an Enterprise key for $2500 yr. to keep using our data for your business."
I explained to them that this was not a business yet but it was gearing up to be a business and I was just testing their system against my decoding algorithm's. Of course that did not matter to them and they just said "We will revoke your key on May 2nd." So in my last reply to them I said "I have 20 years of experience installing and maintaining Linux servers, so I will just build my own mapping /geocoding system."
Their next reply is what set this off as something that is viable. And it was "You can always use one of our open source keys, you are limited to one request per second but you would not have to go through the trouble of building your own server." That is the kicker, I never said building my own server would be trouble, I just said I was going to do it.
So with that bit of background out of the way so far I have figured up the numbers and been in contact with Amazon AWS about the cost of using cloud instances to process this 1TB+ of data that it will take to pull this off... As a side note Amazon AWS was very helpful in answering my questions and giving me cost estimations to process that much data. So as far as the big map providers, the one huge advantage I have over them is it does not take a team of hundreds to maintain this system, I have done it so long for my current employer I could do it mostly myself which would allow me to undercut the big boys by as much as 90% and still be profitable if I wanted to take it that far.
I will need some capital to get this off the ground so that is the point I am at now, deciding weather I want to do a Kickstarter or some other means of the initial capital. To to it bare bones I need to find about $2k, to make sure I have all of my bases covered without having to scramble at any point would take about $5k so that is where I am at now... I will add more information as I get all of the little details figured out.
