Was a huge admirer of SELF-HELP authors since 1996, BUT...

It's been 16 years and I haven't APPLIED or put into action with what I've read. You name it, I've read them all. The main reason I'm AWAKE now is because I am 40 years old, married, and with a beautiful fun loving 4 year old daughter. It's obviously not just about me anymore (not that I really cared about myself to begin with). Family is my foremost passion now, and I am willing to go the SUPER-lane if given the opportunity. I initially came across MJ's testimony MJ DeMarco*|* My Story (via Amazon) while checking out the Self-Help category. Needless-to-say, I completely empathized and related to his background, with the exception of MJ's drive and achievements. I just take immense interest in stories like MJ's. However, this time around it is absolutely vital to make action. My only motto (confidence being a given):

The past cannot be changed. However, the future depends on the present. Map out objectives and immediately put it into action. Perfection will manifest only after many imperfections. Moreover, Careful-Critical-Calculated proactive efforts will get us there more rapidly and with far less challenges.

Posses all of the 5 "D's": Desire, Direction, Discipline, Diligence, & Dedication. And continue to Observe... Absorb... Learn... Understand... Know... Experiment... Practice... Teach...

The motto was possible by the way of mesh mashing various Self-Help articles, and I copied and pasted this from my private blog. Anyways, before I get carried away with quotes and references, I should state that I would like to think that I can relate to those that say they are a creative visionary desiring to express and transform life experiences into something redemptive, universal, and valuable through digital media. By the way, referencing most of that from a Carl Jung Enneagram book. Basically, to BE some kind of digital media artist is NOT the intention. But rather, I want to create anything worthwhile and enjoyable interdependently. I am so glad to be here and hopefully spread some contagious entrepreneur joy. So let's get cracking!

Cheers!

It's been 16 years and I haven't APPLIED or put into action with what I've read

A lot of people fall into the trap of reading too much and taking too less ACTION. I myself have spent reading countless self-help book the last 5 years. Some ideas in them surely have transformed my life, but from a big perspective it even made me more f*cked up. Because there's always this pattern that "I need this concept, a new idea, another book, without this self-help I suck etc.." that made me chase yet another "magic pill".

This magic pill attitude basically consists of looking for the "matrix glitch" that once you got it, you will be happy all the time and everything works out... This fantasy simply ignores that it takes consistent, repetitive ACTION, every single day, to become the person you want to be. Rituals, Habits. Step by step. You cannot climb a mountain by reading you there. You take a frist step, hell, you may even fall and have to choose another mountain (or even land in the hospital), "what doesn't kill you only makes you stronger.."

It's been 16 years and I haven't APPLIED or put into action with what I've read
. I'm 22, and recently I realised that if i continue in this manner, I will just become on of those keyboard jockeyes that have a library full of great books, but never really experienced reality out there in the world, spending time with other human beings experiencing this so called "human life". I don't want to be a pussy. I want to be the hero of my own movie, and I'm glad to share this journey with other heroes, like you, on this forum.

Thanks for writing your post, it really resonated with something within me!

What are you complaining about?

You are the richest person in the world. You don't have a Porsche but you have the chance to go home every day to your daughter, kiss her on the forehead and feel the luckiest parent in the world.

If I were you, I would go to church (or whatever religious / spiritual movement you support) and thank God (replace that with the higher being in which you believe) for this blessing. You are the richest person in the world.

Great post.

I'm 24, joined the forum today, and also LOVE self-development/self-help. I agree that reading and not taking action gets you nowhere; the thing that people miss about that is that thinking/reading etc is usually working off false/incomplete ideas anyway. Taking action gets rid of false barriers and hurdles, and puts you into real contact with what is actually going on.

This is a physical world and stuff gets changed by doing stuff. Once you make that cognitive leap, the satisfaction from actually effecting a physical change is such a bigger rush, the urge to read/study diminishes, and the urge to take action overtakes it!

And I fully agree with the above post. Having a wife and a daughter that you both love and who love you, is an unbelievable blessing. Love is what makes everything else worthwhile.

Looking forward to being a member here!
