Nowadays, when it comes to physical products, I feel it's becoming increasingly difficult to create real barriers to entry. The product itself is rarely a barrier anymore. I can simply perform a reverse image search online, find the exact product, and quickly contact a supplier.
Because of that, I believe the real barriers to entry often lie elsewhere—such as distribution, community, and, most importantly, the brand.
What I'm about to say may sound like a scam. For example, if I own a vineyard and someone asks why my wine costs $10 more than another bottle, I could easily say that my wine has been aged five years longer, making it older and better tasting, whether that's actually true or not.
Obviously, businesses should deliver on the promises they make. If you want to build a true Productocracy, your product has to justify its claims. However, I still feel that one of the strongest ways to differentiate a product and make it unique is through brand, because a brand allows you to influence how customers perceive value by leveraging value biases.
