Building Products That Users Actually Love: Solve Real Problems, Step by Step
I’ve spent years working on projects where I gave everything… only to realize that most of my efforts weren’t creating real value. It’s frustrating, but it taught me one crucial lesson: stop focusing on what looks cool, and start focusing on what actually matters for users.
Here’s a methodology I follow, applied to the fitness app sector as an example :
1. Identify Core Standards
Before innovating, check what every credible product already provides. For a fitness app, this includes:
- Tracking workouts and calories
- Library of exercises with instructions
- Notifications or reminders for sessions
- User profile with basic goal tracking
Goal: Ensure the product is functional and reliable from day one.
2. Identify Impactful Differentiators
Next, observe what some competitors add, but only keep what solves real problems:
- Personalized workout plans based on level and goals
- Interactive exercise videos with posture correction
- Detailed progress tracking with motivating visuals
Why it matters: These features directly solve real user problems and create meaningful differentiation.
3. List Unmet Needs
Then, identify frustrations existing apps fail to solve:
- Clunky interfaces and confusing navigation
- Generic plans that don’t adapt to personal progress
- Lack of real-time feedback on performance
Opportunity: Addressing these unmet needs creates real value and sets the product apart.
4. Turn Features and Needs Into Problems
Combine the differentiators (phase 2) and unmet needs (phase 3) into a list of user problems. Number them and use them as your roadmap:
- Users can’t track their performance clearly → “I want to know how I’m improving without guessing.”
- Workouts are too generic → “I need a plan that fits my level and goals.”
- Exercises are done incorrectly → “I want guidance to avoid injuries and improve form.”
- Users get lost in the app → “I want to find the right workout quickly without frustration.”
- Motivation drops over time → “I need feedback and milestones to stay engaged.”
- Limited offline access → “I want to train anywhere, even without internet.”
Approach: Solve one problem at a time, starting with the simplest, highest-impact ones.
5. Enhance Perceived Value
Once essential problems are solved, improve the product to create perceived value:
- Clean and intuitive interface
- Gamification and motivational coaching
- Offline mode for flexibility
- Clear progress insights to keep users engaged
These enhancements make the product feel indispensable.
6. Communicate the Value
Finally, ensure users understand why your app is different:
- Highlight unique features and benefits clearly
- Share user success stories
- Provide educational resources to maximize the app’s potential
