I mean c'mon dude, that's pretty rich coming from you

View attachment 43068

My stance, after doing research for those fancy degrees is most mental health disorders arise to compensate for specific life problems when an individual does not possess the resources to overcome them. Once the individual has the appropriate internal resources, then the problem tends to fade.

Most of these disorders are not clearly linked to some chemical imbalance in the brain or body (i.e. depression) so the imbalance is not corrected by pills, exercise, eating habits etc. (although exercise and eating habits are part of the solution since they open up access to internal resources).

Since therapy often focuses on reflection instead of delivering useful resources (such as training in the art of reason) it also regularly fails to produce good results and often makes things worse.

For disorders that do have a clear source within the body, pharmaceutical treatments work pretty well because it is easy to target and change the problem at the source.

For everything else, it's largely a crapshoot where you throw shit at the wall until something sticks.

Over long periods of time, people change, problems change, the body changes, so I believe that disorders often subside due to the natural ebbs and flows of life and then return when a new big problem shows up that an individual doesn't know how to deal with.

If an individual continues ANY treatment for long enough, then the natural course of life tends to resolve the problem as life changes. This presents the illusion that whatever treatment was used most recently must have been the solution to that particular problem.

All of that said, I'm not an expert on this stuff. That is just what I concluded from my studies (and a few personal experiences).

That’s not to say depression and anxiety can’t be very real and some people do need pills but there’s definitely some truth to the statement that the majority of “depression” and “anxiety” is some trendy virtue signal pushed by pharma companies and the woke agenda to weaken and feminise men.

You can understand why someone would make a statement dismissing all mental health issues when so many of them are bullshit or self inflicted and easily fixed.

@MitchC

You can't suck and blow at the same time. Either you think that there are some cases of mental health issues. Or you think there are none.

"mental health" is sad, fake, and gay

it was made up by pharma companies to sell you pills

ignore your feelings, get results, then you'll notice that you have the feelings that you want (then repeat)

This is complete 100% dismissal of any possibility that mental health exists.

Not what he said at all. He didn't say "majority".

In fact, to support his position he went back to find a buddy! And revived an old thread where Johny boy posted this gem:
Say what you want, I know this is a highly unpopular belief and I fully expect other people to get pissed I’m saying this. So just know if anyone gets mad, feel free to not tell me because I don’t care.

Depression is made up bullshit by people who enjoy being victims and anyone who “has” it is just being lazy in blaming their problems on something they call “depression”. It’s a nice scapegoat.

Make more friends, date cute girls, get in shape, make more money, kick more a$$, live a better life, be better than most people, you’ll wonder where your silly depression went.

Believe what you want. I’ll keep believing what I see with my own two eyes and I’ll keep enjoying life.

And bumped it with this:

100% - winning will fix all your head problems

The more I read your old posts @Johnny boy , the more I like you and want you to succeed.

Lmao. I love you dude.

Hmm... I'll just interpret that as a kudos and leave it there. :)

On a more serious note (which is rare for me in this thread, as I prefer to add lighter fluid to a small fire for entertainment purposes).

I am a very lucky guy. Born white, male, 6ft tall, healthy brain and body - I don't know jack shit about what it feels like to have a mental health disorder. But I am also a bit older now and those moments right after my testicles dropped and I thought I knew everything there was to know about the world seem to be over. The more I learn, the more I realize how little I know. And our brains are an uncharted territory.

About a decade ago we bought some social housing (SROs) buildings where tenants were on support from the government because they had addition and mental health issues. It was cheap real estate but with a ton of problems. I interacted with people there as well as with outreach programs that were helping them. I learned a lot on my own skin that no, they are not like me. They cannot just ignore their brain issues and everything will be good again. Many people are indeed broken! They do need help. It's not all made up by pharma or fake.

That said, I've also seen spoiled kids from local wealthy families be lazy. They were silver spoon fed all their lives and now they think they have "mental health issues", when in fact they don't. They were manipulated by mass media into an easy out - oh poor baby, you can't focus? Here is a chemical solution to your lack of discipline. You all know the type.

The problem I have with what @WillHurtDontCare posted is that he was definitive about it. As if he's "an expert", which ironically is what he's poking fun at at the pharma companies! And my argument back to him is that with a healthy brain it's easy to take his and Jonny Boy's stance, but you need a healthy brain to do that.

Interesting... "web scraping" deemed legal, this was how I kickstarted my business a century ago.

LinkedIn sued some company a while back because they made millions from scraping LinkedIn's data.

I'm still surprised by it, though I'm certainly in favor of the decision.

Edit: forgot a detail - and the judge ruled in favor of the company and said that it was legal

My son caught Covid. The first day he was pretty down with a high fever; but from the next day on, he was almost back to normal. Kids! They have that awesome ability to heal.

Yesterday, few days after he tested positive, I got up, not feeling well. I could immediately sense something is off. I have not done a test, but I suspect I am positive as well or at very least I am fighting something.

So I look at my Garmin watch and see this:

View attachment 43043

Ouch.

I didn't have my watch on my wrist for the first half of the day. I put it at noonish.
I was just laying down. For comparison, this is a normal day where I was resting:

View attachment 43044

On my Oura ring, which I use for sleep tracking:
- my resting heart rate has been trending up the last couple of nights
- my heart rate variability plummeted from around 60 to 20 (highest HRV is better)
- the Readiness score has also been trending down. I am on average above 80. It went down to 60 to now 24 - my lowest number ever.

Officially tested positive. A few days in, today was the first time I woke up rested.

My physical stress levels looked like this yesterday:

Screen Shot 2022-04-19 at 9.33.32 AM.png

I would say I am at 75% back. I randomly get hit by bouts of exhaustion.
I will try a light mobility session today to see where I stand.

One lesson learned from this: as much as those devices are not medical grade, they can still tell you something is off. I was half-dabbling on certain metrics, but I will look at them more seriously. The stats from Oura is an advance notice that something is coming even if I don't feel it yet, and Garmin confirms when my body is fighting something.

Those levels of physical stress are what I tend to see when I do HIIT sessions full of burpees and heart rate going in the 150bpm. Seeing that at rest is quite scary.

Back in my teens I’d taking my resting pulse each morning. I’d know a few days beforehand that a cold was on its way.

I agree with your view, that’s what my post was about, I thought it was quite clear when I said the truth lying somewhere in the middle of his post and Simons post.

I was merely pointing out that with the way the pendulum of social issues is swinging so hard in each direction now, that with all these virtue signalling woke bots saying that everyone has depression and everyone needs pills and therapy, that it’s no surprise that someone would come out and say the total opposite of that, which is that no one has depression.

Truth is some people do. Most of it self inflicted and easily solved. Some more serious which may require pills and therapy.

Believe me, I'm the last person that would advise someone to take pills of any sort. Anyone that knows my story can attest to that. But that doesn't discount that some people need them at least for a little while so they can stabilize.

WillHurtDontCare argues that "mental health" was created by Big Pharma so that they could sell you pills. Even if the term was coined by people looking to profit out of it that doesn't mean that the root issue is not there anymore.

There are people out there that pretend to be homeless because they're too lazy to earn money the hard way.

Does it mean that homelessness as a concept was created by lazy people to take advantage of other people's empathy? Obviously not.

Does it mean that every homeless person out there is simply lazy, wallowing in their suffering, and not actively trying to change their life for the better? Obviously not.

Does it mean that all you have to do is simply ignore your homelessness and it'll go *poof*? Obviously not.

So, is "mental health" sad, fake, gay, and created by Big Pharma to sell you pills and the solution is to ignore your feelings? Obviously F*cking not.

Recommended chess books:

The one I started with was "Every Great Chess Player Was Once a Beginner" Old book, because I got it as a birthday present when I was 10. Still, it's a great introduction to the full game. Yikes. never mind. Apparently never re-released; used copies start at $150 on Amazon!

Okay, on to some others:

Next favorite: 1001 Chess Exercises for Beginners, worth following along as you practice IRL
Chess Brilliancy, once you know how to play - this is a compendium and analysis of great chess games (not for the beginner, but mind-blowing for strategy)
Best overall, if you can't get your hands on the first: Winning Chess Series

Check out Chessable too. But the best way, of course, is to jump in and play. Last time, my husband disgustedly forfeited during a tipsy oversize game in Miami. Fun times!

@Fox I watch every practice session, qualifying, and full-length race. I also do a lot of sim racing and frequently go karting.

You probably won't find a whole lot of people interested in F1 though, especially since the majority of the members of the forum are based in the U.S. and there are currently no American F1 drivers for them to cheer for.
Pretty much the only time in my life I've convinced someone to watch a race with me was the Aus GP last weekend. Leave it to me to pick one of the most boring races after last years madness where nearly every race was a banger lol.

Any resources or suggestions on where and how to learn?

I’ve been playing on my phone the chess.com app is great but I have no idea what I’m doing or where to even start on learning to improve.

For all this talk on mental health, for smart people you guys really missed something really easy and really obvious,.

Avoid Reggaetón at all costs.

There, saved you guys some serious anguish.

It really was one of the most boring ones as of late. Last year was an outlier though.. equal points in the last race, last-lap overtake. My heart was going crazy watching that live.

Just talked to a random neighbor that moved into the neighborhood I met while walking my dog first time I met the lady. She was actually pretty well informed on the housing situation and BlackRock/Private Equity buying up all these homes and then renting them out. She lives in the home of an old friend of mine, he sold off this house to PE and now PE is renting it out to this lady, she connected the dots pretty well and she knows she is getting screwed.

Could be trouble ahead for politicians when even regular people on the street can see they are getting screwed.

Lyrics in every one of his songs: "Daddy Yankee yo".

I guess he is OG? For some ear bleeding try and find some newer artists. Just terrible haha.

I stand by my "everywhere should just play classical music in the background" rather than local Top 40.

Changing DNS to a new host is one of the worst things about switching providers for a website.

Why does it always have to be so complicated with all these weird TXT records, CNAME records and stuff? Why does it take so freaking long and you don't even know if you set it up correctly until 24 hours pass?

Sounds like an opportunity for an improvement unless the Internet infrastructure somehow prevents this.
