Poookly I am in the same boat.

I could blame the fact I still don't have proper internet set up but that's still just an excuse.
I will be posting back up the challenges starting today and everyday until I finish.

Day 9

First off Lex, Thank You so much for this guide and all your posts. They're very helpful.

1. Close your eyes and imagine selling your first product or service.
If you're already selling something, then imagine taking it to the next level. Get a solid picture of what that will look & feel like, and what you'll do with all the extra money you'll have when you achieve it!

2. Help someone without asking anything in return. After today's lesson you may start to understand that everything is an exchange of energy, and nothing ever goes without return. Just because you don't ask for something in return doesn't mean you don't get something in return.

I attempted to help my host dad look for his glasses, but he found them himself. Will edit in more as I go about my day.

3. Take some action you've been avoiding.

I'm avoiding applying for work on upwork. Will send out 5 applications TONIGHT and will update tomorrow.

4. Write 5 creative headlines that MAKE THEM STOP.
  1. Client Say YES To Me All The Time: How To Get Them To Buy
  2. Triple Your Results Instantly: Be The Product They Can't Leave
  3. Your Customers Will Leave You Unless...
  4. The Four Fastest Quick-Fixes For Your Workouts
  5. The Elon Musk Effect: Three Things That Make You Irresistible to Success(And Possibly Billions)

5. Write 3 paragraphs of copy utilizing some of the tools from today's lesson.

Having A Hard Time Seeing Gains?
Feeling Like You're Plateauing In The Gym?

I felt the same way and after four grueling months in the gym, I'd had enough so I researched various methods to get past my plateau.
Guess what I found?
Absolutely nothing useful. So..
I tested just about everything for the next year until I stumbled upon what I call

The Four Fastest Quick-Fixes For Your Workouts
I rigorously applied these for the next year and saw results like none other.
To confirm my secret HACK, I applied it to my clients. One of them went from 150lbs. to 180lbs. In ONLY 4 Months. His results SKYROCKETED.
I 100% know it will work for you too.
Furthermore, I believe it so much that I'm going to give you 2 of the Quick-Fixes Free.
1. Shorter Workout Times & Longer Rest Periods
2. Lower Reps & Heavy Weights

As for the other 2, all you have to do is let me know you want them:

[Insert CTA that says "I Want The Rest of the Workout Quick-Fixes"]

Since this is so potent and could break the fitness industry, I'm only making this available for the next week.

[Insert CTA that says "I Want My Quick-Fixes Before They're Gone!"

@Fox You called me out haha! Jk of course, but I didn't want to report empty handed so I applied for a gig on upwork. Here's the proposal I sent(feedback appreciated):
Hey,

Poookly here, I read your job posting and it seems you're looking for someone to write blog & newsletter posts for you.

I'd love to help you grow your business through those outlets.

I can start ASAP and will re-write an infinite amount of times until you're satisfied.

Day 6 Challenge

Are You Addicted to Your Phone? Reclaim Control and Take Back Your Life in One Simple Step!

Do any of the following situations sound familiar?

You call an elevator and pull out your phone to browse reddit for the next 30 seconds.

You’re at dinner with family and everyone is on the phone — your table becomes a beacon of blue light in a sea of your fellow diners.

When you pull out your phone, you automatically navigate to the internet — even if you meant to call your best friend.

You refresh ESPN between sets at the gym only to realize that the next set started two minutes ago.

You get a prickly feeling in the back of your neck if you don’t check your phone immediately after the latest ding of an alert sounds off.

You sit down to do three hours of work and end up spending four hours on Candy Crush and Clash of Clans.

Look, these reactions are normal. It’s completely normal behavior to want to fill a void with activity. When there is a pause in the day, or a lull in the action, our first response is to fill it. But do you really want to kill time on your phone? Have you ever thought about how your life would change if you put down the phone and filled that time with something else?

This one change will allow you to answer that question for yourself.

Or maybe you’re frustrated and already want to change this habit but can’t. The siren’s call of social media and funny gifs is just too hard to ignore.

This one change will immediately break the habit for you.

What is it?

What is the cure-all to phone addiction and compulsive smart phone consumption?

The answer is simple.

Buy a basic cell phone.

You know — those flip phones that were standard not even 10 years ago.

The effects are instantaneous and ripple across your entire life. Your phone will become a phone again. Simply a tool for you to use and not the other way around. Call, text, and store contact information. Done.

Think about it, there’s nothing lost.

Need to check your email? Just log on from your computer.

Need directions to a new restaurant? Buy a $50 GPS that you will own forever.

Can’t live without your 17 reminders and 5 calendar alerts? Yes you can. Breathe. Slow down and trust yourself to figure it out like the rest of humanity has done for thousands of years.

Yet, there’s everything to be gained. Clarity, focus, freedom — even cash.

Regain your humanity and interact more with those around you.

What do you think you’ll remember tomorrow? That re-posted meme that you stopped laughing at two months ago? Or the way your heart pounded when you greeted that cute person on the elevator and left with their number and a date for Friday? Be honest here.

Stop paying $100/mo for a device that you’ll be convinced to upgrade in a year, and a data plan that never seems to stop growing.

Use your down time to read something new. Use it to learn something you’ve always wanted to know. Use it to call an old friend or reach out to a new one.

Use it to take back your life and regain your place in reality.

Buy your basic phone today and thank yourself tomorrow.

Update:

I actually failed the challenge(Sorry Lex!), but...

I've read half of ca$hvertising and combined that with what I learned from Lex

Been putting it in action on Upwork and right now, waiting to hear back from clients.

i've been visiting their websites and writing the copy for them and pasting it in my proposal.

I would like some critique in the proposal letters I sent:

[Name],

I looked over your website and your product looks amazing. I want to help you market it.

I myself used to suffer with a lot of the problems you seem to be tackling with [Product].

Anyways, I have attached a rough draft copy edit of the homepage. I included some notes in red on the word file.

One question I have is what route would you want to market this from? In my letter, I wrote the copy from a perspective of [Product] being a program to help people gain control over their emotional life.

Would love your thoughts on the approach.

Cheers,

Poookly

Another one that had three questions:

Hey [Name]/[Other Name on Site],

I looked over your site's copy. The first link in the job proposal.

I went ahead and re-wrote the copy for you guys. The file is attached.

I chose to create a brand around "[Product]" and market it as a [Niche] solution because it will have the biggest impact on your audience.

i can re-write as much as you need until you are satisfied.

Let me know your thoughts,

Poookly

Why did you apply to this particular job?

I love writing and copy writing, so having a chance to write copy for a blog that is about [niche] is amazing.

Do you have any questions about the job description?

None at the moment.

Why do you think you are a good fit for this particular project?

Because I'm flexible and open to feedback. If I write something and it's not satisfactory, I will swiftly re-write and tweak it until both parties are pleased.

Furthermore, I offer a money-back guarantee if you are not satisfied with the services.

Thanks in advance.

P.S. Lex, thanks for this thread. Seriously, the offering value to others mindset has creeped into other areas of my life and the results are shocking me.

Each Chocolate is made with extreme care

Here there's room for more sensory input.

"extreme care" is vague.

This is your chance to create a picture in the reader's mind, not just of the chocolate, but of what went into it in terms of how much time and effort it took to create and how much chocolate is packed in each bite.

What experience is the reader in for if they break down and buy this chocolate right now? What experience do they hope to give their partner? What makes this chocolate special compared to all those other chocolates?

Each delectable chocolate is made with the profound deliciousness of ten thousand grams of rich, earthy Mediterranean cocoa powder hand blended with natural cane sugars and filled with molten caramel. Every tasty bite is chilled on a frozen slab of ice stone for three days to forge a tiny block of perfection. An ecstasy the likes of which is only found in dreams.

Sometimes vague is good, like when you need the prospect to make assumptions about your product. But when push comes to shove, people buy experiences. "Extreme care" doesn't tell them anything about what they might experience. On the other hand it's easy to imagine molten caramel exploding in your mouth when you sink your teeth deep into one of the softest, richest chocolates on the planet.

Just want to say a huge thank you again to @SinisterLex for this inspiring, motivating, value packed thread.

I've only completed Day 5 of the Challenge - but just booked my first gig on Freelancer.com!

I'm sure my proposal stood out because I wrote it in terms of their interests and goals, not my own.

$100 editing job for 2 hours work. Can't wait to keep applying what I've learnt.

What about less syllables=easier to read ? Should you not replace delectable with delicious or some other more common word?

Depends on the effect you're going for. Who is your audience? Some people don't want things dumbed down. Some want to buy a product that makes them feel smart or classy or wealthy. It's all about giving them what they want. Communicate how your audience wants to be communicated with.

No shortcuts.

Based on the PMs I keep getting to review Upwork profiles, I can't help but notice how many just don't get it.

Time after time and profile after profile it's the same thing. Newbs trying to make a quick buck...

Some going so far as to copy things directly from my writing on this forum.

Some attempting to copy my profile.

Seriously?!

I wonder what makes these "copywriters" think they can just copy me and become an instant success?

What makes a brand new copywriter think they'll earn $100 an hour in 2 weeks?

When I made my initial post regarding copywriting, it was only to post about my success to prove success is possible.

It was never meant to persuade anyone to write copy. It was meant to help you find your own path and nothing more.

Yet people seem to think copying my style or my words will help them hit it big.

Ask me for advice when you haven't even finished my threads.

Ask me to personalize my secrets when they're open for all to read.

Maybe if they read my threads they might discover I spent 10 years learning to be persuasive.

Maybe they'd discover I spent a year learning to write short stories and proper English grammar.

Maybe they'd discover I never hand wrote a single letter mimicking someone else's style.

Maybe they'd discover I paid thousands out of pocket to self-educate in a variety of topics.

Maybe they'd discover I never asked anyone to review my profile or help me get ahead.

Maybe they'd discover it wasn't my ability to write copy that helped me in the first place.

Maybe they'd discover it was my ability to come up with creative solutions to others' problems that propelled me forward.

Why does one of the world's largest entrepreneur forums direct people to my advice on copywriting?

Did you know some of the copywriters here wrote copy before I was born?

So how did I become the expert? The go-to guy?

Because I invested the time to figure out the process.

There are NO shortcuts.

No shortcuts.

If you want to make money mowing lawns you have to invest in a lawn mower.

If you want to make money building apps you have to learn to code.

If you want to make money selling shit on ebay you have to learn to use ebay.

If you want to make money flipping houses you have to put cash on the line for a house and learn real estate.

If you want to make money writing, YOU HAVE TO LEARN TO WRITE.

And I'm not just talking about grammar and technique.

The secret of my writing isn't the technique.

It's not my style.

It's not my reputation.

It's not the specific words I use.

IT'S A COMBINATION OF EVERYTHING I'VE LEARNED OVER A LONG PERIOD OF TIME.

And you want to know the secret of why it worked for me?

The key to why I made money instantly, and why so many others struggle after months or even years?

It's because I took action. Day after day, year after year.

Action = Results

I spent time learning, taking action to understand, failing over and over.

And then, one day, something magical happened.

One day I didn't fail.

One day I started making money.

But it wasn't the day I expected.

It wasn't the day after the day I expected.

It wasn't until the day I knew 100% for sure that I could do something valuable...

...because I put more time and effort into it than anyone else.

...because I came up with answers to people's problems.

...because I went out of my way to give them what they wanted and needed.

...because I broke all the rules.

...because I decided to do something different than the way the books said to do it.

...because I was ready and willing to take action.

Then I started making money.

To get what you've never had, you've got to do what you've never done.

And if you aren't even willing to put your own shit out there and find out if it sells...

Then you're not a copywriter.

If you want to know how good your profile is, put it on the line.

If people contact you then you know it's good enough.

If people do not contact you, then you need to change something.

Before you even think of writing copy for someone else, you've gotta be able to sell yourself.

Why do you keep trying to sell it to me?

I'm not your audience.

I'm not looking to hire you.

I'm not interested in creating more competition for myself...

So think about that before you send me your profile.

Ask yourself if you've actually tested it to find out if it sucks.

And above all, stop looking for shortcuts.

There are no shortcuts.

NO SHORTCUTS.

P.S. Here's what it means when you spend all your time worrying about making your profile perfect without clients.

1. It means you're action faking.
2. It means you're lazy.
3. It means you believe people will come to you without proof and without you going after them.
4. It means you're afraid to apply to gigs because you're too proud to find out you might suck.
5. It means you won't get hired.

You have something like 60 connects to use per month to find gigs.

Some of you are burning through those like my Jeep burns through gas.

I've pulled in 4 new gigs this month through Upwork and rejected 2 to 3 others.

2 of those gigs I applied for and 2 found me.

All received a custom tailored response that took a great deal of time and effort to write.

Including the rejects.

So before you tell me you can't get gigs and before you tell me how much time you spend on your profile...

Ask yourself what you can do differently to get different results.

There are no shortcuts.

No shortcuts.

One Item That WILL CHANGE Your Life

What simple item does EVERY successful person have

that over 95% of average people don’t?

They look at it in the morning. Study it in detail. Make mental notes of it for the rest of the day. Then they place it carefully somewhere for the next day.

Some of them do this before they even get out of bed.

What it is this simple item?

A written sheet of their goals

Does this sound familiar? Setting goals on New Years Eve and then forgetting about them a week later until next year rolls around.

Don’t feel bad – that’s 97% of us.

Professionals, in all fields, know that clarity is key. I am taking about the top 1%.

What does this means for me?

You would really want them too! But where do people fail then?

Really
Help Someone

I brought one of my friends dinner (he was temporarily out of monetary resources) last night and he said he needed his resume updated. I told him that I'll make it look great for him when he sends it. Actually looking forward to doing it.

Day 2 Challenge

1. Help someone. Do it without asking for anything in return. Just like yesterday.

I brought a cake for my God son's birthday. I even referred the baker to the people there after getting rave reviews about the quality of the design and taste.

2. Come up with 5 to 10 products / services / or something else you want to sell. Give serious consideration to the questions above. Figure out the customer's deepest desire. Figure out the emotions they want to experience. Then write 5 to 10 headlines utilizing what you've learned, that MAKE THEM STOP!

Here we go. All constructive feedback welcome!

1. No More "Up-Nose Funk"!
(Glad Trash Bags)

2. Because Sometimes Maybe Isn't Good Enough....
(Depends Underwear)

3. Technology... Accelerated.
(Apple)

4. The Name for Home Security
(ADT)

5. Kick the Sheep Out!
( SleepNumber Mattress)

I'm an admin of my BJJ academy Facebook and did this. I'm not sure that this is the best type of copy for Facebook, or anywhere for that matter. Just looking to take action and get feedback. The interaction to the post is trending better than what we typically see but not way better. Any thoughts on how I can improve?

Day 3 Challenge
1. Help someone. Solve a problem for someone. Do it without asking for anything in return just like yesterday, and just like the day before. Remember, it doesn't have to be something epic. Just something that impacts them positively in some way.

2. Write 5 new headlines that MAKE THEM STOP, and tap into your prospects desires & emotions.

3. Using your product or service, or something you make up, write a paragraph or two to your target customer utilizing the influential phrases you learned in this post. Consider using all 3 types of phrases for maximum impact, and remember to write with intent. Find ways to show how your product helps your customer while driving them toward the action you want them to take.

P.S.

I've enjoyed the past couple of days. The helping people part wasn't that difficult as I already try to do that on a daily basis. What I noticed that my brain is being turned on to looking for and analyzing different copy I come across. I don't know if that was the intended purpose but it's a cool benefit. Also the difference in time to come up with the 5 copies reduced drastically. As a rookie in this space of copywriting I feel like I can do well in copy with practice just like any other skill I've acquired in life.

Good thread Lex!

Sup Lex,

Curious about this now. How exactly does this compare to other forms of writing? Is it a matter of hitting target word counts daily? Is it crafty? Can you be a shark and them your prey? hehe.

Cheers bud.

Sup Lex,

Not really any target word counts to hit. It compares to fiction writing in the sense short stories play a role in strong copy. Beyond that there's not much similarity. One is writing to sell and the other to entertain. It's more a combination of structure & craft. There's a certain science to it, but also an art.

I made money faster with copywriting than with fiction, but it's much less enjoyable since you're tied directly to your clients and they tend to want things when they want them and usually with little notice. The one thing I like better than fiction writing is the timetable. There's a lot more turn-around in a shorter period of time with copy. You're not waiting months to finish that next book or for a freelancer to finish it.

In the end if I had to choose between fiction writing / copywriting I'd probably choose fiction. Harder to sell and harder to build an audience, but it scales much better than freelance copywriting and it's all behind the scenes. Of course if you learn copywriting it will help your fiction sales. ;)

I posted this on Facebook for my business and "boosted" it. I've gotten about 30 clicks in about 400 views so far, I posted yesterday afternoon. No calls or anything yet but I wouldn't think there would be, too soon.

Any suggestions for improvement? Are the clicks at an expected/acceptable level?
