IF one were to move to Scottsdale, where would one want to look? Good schools, nice (but not crazy opulent) homes, etc?

Plus the metro area isnt all AZ is. Just within a hour and a half of the city theres places like Prescott and Cottonwood if the Phoenix area is too hot for you.

My kids go to Horizon High School here, which is in north-ish Scottsdale. It's been ranked among the top 10 in the country. My youngest one also went to Desert Shadows Middle School, which was good I can't speak for other schools or other levels like elementary.

The southern part of Scottsdale is 'downtown' / 'old town' and is basically around where last year's meetup was. It's where you will find more of the younger crowds who like clubs, nightlife, etc. You will find more apartments in this area. Central/north has tons of beautiful neighborhoods with homes of all sizes. North/northeast has newer development.

I recommend checking out the area using Zillow.com, as you can narrow down to what you are after pretty easily - and at the same time see a visual map of where those homes are.

So everyone is dashing on the hot summer days, but how about the days during winter, which are the "too cold for pool" months? November-January?

I'm looking for a getaway from the Western European winter, I like SE asia, but environment wise, Phoenix beats the crap out of it... And I loved the weather there during the meetup

There are no too cold for the pool months (in Scottsdale or Tampa).

Seriously though, I'd live in Arizona. It's a great place. I just might head that way.

And temperature/heat aside for a moment... We have frikkin' CONSTANT blue skies and sunshine here. :) Literally, every day is stunning. The birds are chirping everywhere, the sun is shining on your day.

Well it's a big decision so I've run the numbers vs my hometown via Wikipedia

Average Yearly Rainfall-
Scottsdale-9.37 inches vs 96 inches

Sunshine Hours per year-
Scottsdale - 3876 vs 1917

Average High/Low Temperature Range-
Scottsdale 38f to 105f vs 39f to 68f

Number of Snakes
Arizona- First Google result "Year-round warm temperatures and an incredibly diverse landscape make Arizona a reptile paradise. Home to over 50 species of native snakes, and many more varieties of lizards and desert-loving amphibians, it isn't difficult to find them even in your own backyard" Lovely, just lovely.
New Zealand- no snakes.

I'm thinking the moving costs in 50 gallon drums of sunscreen and full body armor to fight off the marauding snakes would make such a move unviable.

In case anyone is wondering :

#1 is a picture of Clearwater beach and the Pier60, which we visit weekly just to hang out, fish a little, swim a little and buy from the local artisans.

#2 is a picture of @MJ DeMarco's back yard.

The snakes in Arizona sometimes control some of the scorpion population, kind of like Darwanism. So, while some of the scorpions successfully find residential refuge, I hear they are trainable if you spend enough time working with them. Free pets. Add that to the positive side of the ledger.

I suspect those might be your best photos, possibly showing the shiniest dolphins available. Maybe they were even polished beforehand.

Meanwhile being rough, rugged, authentic, we actually get this on our Wikipedia page as our "Typical Weather"

Scorpions too? Even better. I'm half expecting to hear the place also has Flying Yetis "but they haven't eaten anyone in quite a few days"

Though I probably can't point fingers after nearly blowing out a knee chasing two goats off the front lawn last week. Either the goats these days are faster or I'm less agile than I remember.

I shot that photo near the summit of Four Peaks mountain but we've had them right outside our front door.

I have yet to see a single scorpion or snake. Go out on the desert trails, sure you'll see some. They're not just hanging out in people's back yards, lol.

Someone once told me they'd be concerned of living in Norway because they heard we have polar bears... lol. Mmmyeah. :D

And you will be hard pressed to find annoying bugs like flies, gnats, and mosquitos here too. Not saying they don't exist, but there are waaaaaaaay less here than ANY other places I have ever lived (and I've lived in Norway, South Dakota, California, Washington).

I wish I could say the same about scorpions. We've had at least 6 in our home. We've never seen a rattlesnake but plenty of king snakes... right outside our door. Now I live in a more deserty area than Scottsdale so that makes a big difference.

We also have to watch out for poisonous frogs here, lol.

and Florida is the pest capitol of the country. Seems theres always some new epidemic down there. They have to hold snake hunts just to try and control the python population. A couple years ago giant African snails were the pest of the year. Dunno what it is this year. May as well live in the Amazon :)

Do you spray with some CyKick for the scorpions?

I do-politicians.

Personally I'd be inclined to let the pythons have a go at controlling the politician numbers.
