The idea of "taking responsibility for your life" and "don't be a victim" does get discussed. But I think there's not enough emphasize on how important it is.
I think it's very easy to put mental focus on what the "market" is like, what the "industry" is like. For example, I was working on sth related to how software engineering is done in large tech companies. It's easy to put focus on, such and such practice doesn't make sense. Such and such practice is inefficient.
I know it sounds stupidly obvious, but what I realized is, there's no point focusing on any of those things unless it directly relates to my actions. For example, if some practice is inefficient, ok, am I going to create a solution product for it, to make it more efficient? Oh, no? Then stop thinking about it.
All my thoughts should be about: exactly what can I do to achieve my purposes? exactly what actions can I take? e.g. I can learn this or that software framework and use to solve some problem. And this gets me closer to my goals b/c of x, y, z. By contrast, random observations and thoughts, they're not exactly harmful, but simply irrelevant when it comes to me achieving my goals.
I know I'm rambling a little bit. I just want to make the point that this idea seems to be under-rated. The world, the people you deal with, or just anything else, they could be very crazy, very random. But you still have to focus on exactly what *you* can do.
