What happened in 2004 that caused the US stock indexes to go flat/trend down slightly for most of that year? I've been trying to find something but haven't found anything.

I've been reading about the new book Mood Matters by John L Casti. He reckons social events are influenced by the collective mood of society (Mr. Market) and not the other way around. But it seems to me that significant events move the markets. However, I haven't been able to find anything for 2004.
