As I was continuing reading Unscripted and came across chapter 22, it came to mind an outrageous example in my country (Spain) that I wanted to share with you.
Could you imagine how someone could turn an altruistic donation to fight cancer into a diabolic act?
Amancio Ortega, self made billionaire who built a fashion empire from scratch, now the richest man in Europe and fourth in the world (according to Forbes), recently pledged around $380 million to be donated to the public sanitary system in Spain to buy new machines that will enable cancer detection and treatment. What a nice guy, right?
Not so much according to some part of the population who believe that this is only a move to avoid taxation (funny that they think that you do not pay taxes at all for a donation, proof that they have never donated anything in their lives) and that this is dirty money because those are the profits of child labor in overseas countries. They also say that he is rich because he is taking advantage of his employees (when he pays one of the most competitive salaries in the country and generally his employees adore him). This demagogy outrages me!
I cannot believe the push back that he is receiving from his generous donation and the number of people who think like that! I do not know if they are expanding or they are just a small but noisy minority (probably do not have anything better to do than going on social media all day), but I am completely shocked.
What do you think of this? Can you imagine something like this happening in the US?
