Many of you know that I am a school teacher. It is the end of the school year and my kids will move to a different school, middle school, for the first time in 4 years. They attend their current school in grades 2-5 and middle school 6-8. The kids are 11, 12 years old now.
I got to talking with my kids this week about their future at their new school. As they told me their thoughts I wrote some words on the board they shared. The words most often used were "afraid, scared, fear, fail". There were a lot of negative "what if's"
I pointed out the common theme in their thoughts, fear of failure, fear of the unknown.
I also pointed out they were scared of going to 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades at one time too but were successful each year.
I asked them to consider positive what if's. What if I made new friends? What if the teachers liked me? What if I remembered my schedule, lunch, locker combination, etc? What if I were able to do the assignments and be successful?
I told them that thinking about the positive what ifs was just as easy as thinking about the negative what ifs. It was like light bulbs popping on all around the room. They ate it up and want more.
There are about 3 months until their next school year. What a terrible thing to do to yourself for 3 months, allow your brain to beat you up.
I have several observations and questions about this.
Why are we bent to think the negative rather than the positive possible outcomes?
What is holding you back from making the call, sale, proposal, etc that you need to make to be successful?
Are you allowing the negative what if's to stop you?
You will never know the true outcome until you try. Good luck to all.
