Hi,
Been in IT as an employee for 20 years, got a nice package(golden cage, married 2 kids). Hated the most part of my career so far... had my fair shair of sleepless nights due to stress.
Now my parents are retiring and I can take over their business. Womens clothing store. Less stress, income would be sorta similar(but will have to make some purchases like a van etc, hospitalisation, ...). I have nothing with womens clothes though, I am also not the chatty type like my mom is. + it is working weekends as that is when most of the clients come around.
Stresslevel would be way lower to almost not existant(I helped out in the business a lot). I don't mind dealing with shitty customers or thieves. The level of stress I am dealing with in IT is so high that I fear it affects my health so much that I will surely doe before my pension. There is nothing left to love in IT left for me. These kind of oppurtunities only come along once in a lifetime or not though. Getting handed a business.
Not sure if it is for me though. But I feel if I try, I will not be able to get back in IT either as things evolve so fast and have built specific knowledge inside the company I work for, but is useless outside the company. I fear I don't have the affinity with the clients or products that is needed to build a relation with the customers. And I fear I will fail my parents business.
Markets are changing rapidly due to AI, economics are tough all around these days. Youth is ordering clothes online. The old customers my parents have now may run dry over time.
Not sure how I can decide what to do...
