You invest, it by giving it all to someone who went out of his way to help you.

I think of it as giving them some 'seed money' to eventually send you back some rep in time.

The sad thing is if he had followed my advice, I would have given him back double what it cost him. It was a test, he failed. He stayed selfish, bad choice.

Either way, I felt that you deserved to be rewarded for stepping up.
