What is your opinion of using Images from Google into a website's post? Do you condone it?

Because I'm having trouble coming up with pictures for my post and I wanted to know if using images from Google is actually allowed.

Thanks!

This is a good resource for all kinds of free image sites - http://www.bluevertigo.com.ar/ (although what it has to do with pantyhose I have no idea) ;) http://tineye.com is also a very useful image search tool.

Also try flickr but be careful with creative commons images - copyright trolls are alleged to attribute CC to copyrighted works there, and then send extortion letters when they find the images in use. Avoid using anything remotely connected to Getty (istock) like the plague unless you're paying for it. Letters demanding money is their stock in trade.

I'd avoid the hassle and use legally licensed or genuinely 'free' images, there's plenty out there to choose from!

i used pics from flick for my 1st website but i always asked for a permission of an owner. Really, you can use google images if they are copyright free. Sometimes, it's difficult to id who's a real owner of pics.

As long as you use Advanced Search and filter by "free to use or share, commercially, etc.."

Thanks for the tip. :p

Ah thanks for the wonderful advice. I'm planning on using the images for posts and sometimes make picture quotes from the original images; I'll check out the references you guys have given me. Thanks!

Another question that I'm wondering about is this: would using an image for your website have to be sourced or credited? Or can it be just placed without any mention to the source?

Thanks!

Depends on the license terms. Example: http://www.morguefile.com/license/morguefile

If in doubt, always credit. At least it shows some willing/respect on your part. It's not worth the potential hassle that using a 'stolen' image can bring, so don't waste your time - there are plenty of free legal alternatives, per my link in my first reply.

I personally think taking images from Google or anywhere else and using it without having the right to is the same as stealing physical products. It's plain thievery.

So, I would not recommend doing it.

That said, I run a few blogs and buying images gets expensive, so I had to come up with another option. Thankfully, there are a few good resources that have real free public domain images. Here are a few sites that I use to find real public domain images:

http://www.freestockphotos.biz/

http://www.publicdomainpictures.net/

http://www.alegriphotos.com/

http://publicphoto.org/

http://www.4freephotos.com/

http://search.creativecommons.org/
This one is like a search engine for finding PD images. But be careful with it, not everything it find is actually public domain. Be sure to read the licenses on each image.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Public_domain_image_resources
This page on WP lists a lot more.
