I've recently joined these forums out of a poker career and moving to the fastlane. During my career I was staked and back by two different companies. This means never using your money, but your companies money and in return giving them 50% of your winnings. There is a figure called make up, which comes from money you lose. So you start at a point, zero, and if you lose money you then have to make that money back up before any profit is split between the two parties. So for the business, they are staking money on players for a return in profit however the player can never leave while they are in make up meaning that the company will never actually lose any money on a player.
If you don't know much about poker, one thing you should know is that it is a complicated game that you actually can make money from if you are skilled enough over long term. It is highly competitive with no entry barriers, however the way these business's chose their players is via long term results with good ROI's and many other statistical calculations which in essence guarantee positive results. This does also mean that the income is never predictable and is never controlled. Wondering what everyone thinks about this sort of business model which is quite unheard of.
