I had an idea. What if, some decades ago, US government scientists discovered there was a good chance that Earth was going to be hit by an asteroid relatively soon? Say 50 years. They would probably not tell us, and they would probably try to make outposts on the Moon, in remote locations, and underwater. Isn't that what we are doing now?
We aren't building ways to communicate across galaxies or have some special worldwide government represent Earth to aliens. We are prepping. We are also maxing out our national credit cards. Why not, if we won't be around much longer?
They might not tell everyone because they could not save everyone, but they could save themselves if they didn't talk.
If this is true, the pending UFO disclosures might not contain anything useful, because there really isn't anything useful in them. The truth might just be that we are screwed.
In 1937, a prospector found 16,000 gold bars in a hidden cave in New Mexico, the Victorio Peak treasure. Gold was illegal, so he tried to sell it to the mob. He was talking to a mafia guy and freaked out and ran, and the mafia guy shot him in the back, killing him. Other than the few bars he was showing the mafia, no one knew where the gold was. The US government annexed the land to use as a missile range, and two low-level soldiers later found the cave. They reported it, thinking they would get a reward, and instead they were sworn to secrecy and shipped off. The prospectors' family had the mineral rights to the land and repeatedly sued the government to go look for the gold. The government always denied there was any gold. Satellite photos showed hundreds of tire tracks around the suspected cave entrance. During the Watergate trial, investigators uncovered a group of ex-Generals trying to sell $24B worth of gold bars. They were never fully investigated. It looked like the Army brass stole the gold.
If the world were going to end and only a few people would survive, the people in the bunkers would be people like the ex-Generals and their families. They will rob you blind and let you die if it benefits them. Simple greed might be enough for them to keep a secret like a giant rock coming our way. They would not have a real "disclosure" until civilians or other nations figured it out. The "dark asteroids" (non-reflective) that are mostly invisible might be undetectable to everyone but the government.
