Hi!
I just turned 23. Got a few extra speed points, and whabam, I got into one of the secret sections of the forum. This is the year for me. It's just straight action from this point. I want to turn 24 and know that I have truly made the most of this fine year. Therefore, I'm making a commitment to keep this thread alive until Dec. 11/2015.
Currently, my life needs some significant improvement in all three spectrums of life: health, wealth, & relationships. While the purpose of this thread is to document my progress specifically in the wealth department, I feel taking action and providing value needs to happen in the other two areas simultaneously, otherwise I won't be able to commit the full mental energy needed to generate a real business. Therefore, I will make small notes regarding health/relationships, to keep myself true to consistency. Today I got my gym membership, and it's my goal to attend the gym at least 3 times a week. I did start today.
I also hit another major milestone recently, which is to be employed full time as a web developer, with a specific focus on working with Ruby on Rails + JavaScript. While I've had a plethora of other jobs before, this is a real "career" job--and my first one at that. I barely have a few months of experience, but I got bonafide, respectable source of income, and the experience I pick up here can land me an amazing tech job in a very short time (6 months to a year), should that be my desire.
So, after working 9-5, I've noticed that I already get drained and lose my desire to be productive. I hope to remedy this by exercising after work, relaxing a bit, and sitting down with my laptop in a totally different state post-workout, reinvigorated to succeed.
Now, what is it that I want to produce? And equally importantly, how do I want to produce said item?
I'll explain the latter first, since it synergizes nicely with a frequently updated progress thread. I want to produce software with an agile methodology. The principles of agile development are about getting a MVP out ASAP, getting feedback, and reiterating nonstop. Top tier development studios employ this type of methodology, where teams are given a 1-2 week time period (called sprints or scrums) to produce working software based on User Stories (eg: as a user, I should be able to login, and see a dashboard which manages all my auctions).
Now, what I've decided to build is an employee scheduling SaaS solution. The value proposition is that a manager who must organize schedules/shifts for an abundant amount of part time employees is a tedious task that can be automated quite nicely.
Yes, I know the market already has some solutions. From my research, these solutions are nothing more than glorified spreadsheets, merely giving you a dedicated, attractive-looking space to do your scheduling, and that's why tons of businesses still rely on good 'ol email + excel for all their employee management needs. I'll be carefully analyzing competitor products in depth at a much later stage. If you're a business owner and you (or have someone) manage a plethora of part-timers, I'd love to hear your thoughts.
Alright, back to the plan. I'm going to build my MVP, little-by-little, day by day, and everyone who reads this thread can see the agile progress, and get some first-person insights into building a reasonably complex web application. I'll be going through a sprint myself, starting today. I need to draft some User Stories:
User, role = Manager:
I should....
1) be able to make an account
2) be able to register my business/company
3) be able to create a schedule; either monthly, weekly, or biweekly, and to create shifts within those timeslots
4) be able to assign employees to those shift timeslots
User, role = Employee:
I should....
1) be able to make an account
2) see my current and upcoming shifts
And that's it for now. I have quite a few more stories to add and directions to take, but the goal here is to rapidly produce a working prototype. This sprint will last one week. On Dec. 19th, all the User Stories listed above will be met.
Time to get to work boys.
