Hi guys, this is an introduction and a question?
Quick story: Im a software dev, team lead. Have couple of side projects. Need advise into working 3 days/week for my employer... Finding an employer to work 3 days/week. Or getting a job where I can work remotely, and getting subcontractors to do some tasks for me.
Now a kind of long history, thanks if you read it, it will give me clarity just to write it, thanks!
So I come from the third world, into a "developed" nation. I arrived 5 years ago, with training as an electronic engineer, and some programming. Here I had the challenge to program mobile devices, and in the last 5 years, have worked developing apps for marketing agencies, pharmaceuticals, mining, banking, social apps. Lots of apps I have developed are for enterprise customers or in-house use.
I have 4 kids, 38 Years old, and thanks heavens have a very nice salary. Im working now on a start up, is very well founded, and seems like it will continue developing the product. This startup is managed by a little agency, that builds software for startups, or fintech clients... so I have been learning more about the software process. I have worked for other agencies, but until now i have access to startups, how they go with an MVC, get seed capital, and hopefully get acquired.
With the financing of my current boss im building an IoT [Internet of Things] solution for aged care. And have some side projects where I make cheap solutions for small/medium companies. Like bookings, forms, documentation. I have even some guy that sales software, and have brought some clients.
Now, the problem...
I dont have enough time!
need to organize myself better...
The goal would be to have my star product, the IoT gateway going strong in the next year or 2 years, and so on... The software solutions mobile+backend+web to generate enough income to leave my 9 to 5, in the next 3 months.
I have now a stage where i have been team lead for 2 years in the start up, the investors are asking some difficult figures, the project can continue or not, but whatever happens will continue to be challenging and in need of attention. I cannot leave my job as I need the money to survive...
So I want to tell my boss that i want to work 3 days, and get less salary,
or work from home most days, get same salary, but free my time by allocating to freelancer.
I really need more time to manage my freelancers, I do the architecture of the solution, get the scope, allocate user stories, tasks, then can do code review, as i program in ios, android, and node.
But I dont have enough time with my 8 or 10 hours of work on my normal job, as is very demanding on attention. I feel that i can give some tasks to freelancers and just do some more high level work, and leave the repetitive time consuming to my freelancer.
I need to spend more time getting my solution agency working, producing better solutions, and as i have started some partnerships with clients, where i develop cheaper, but will get a revenue on the software as a service we put together.
The solution agency I see it as what they call in my country the "dog" or "cow" product, that product that always comes back and you can milk every day. That would be my goal to make that my dog or cow product instead of my normal job.
And my "star" product will be my IoT solution, so if i achieve that star i will do more than a home run...
I know all of these things work, as I have already sold them, and i got offers to work in different industries. Have gotten founding and can get the model to scale.
Just need to get better organisation, get more time, and do more with my time.
Feeling confident in the transition, will move to full time on my agency or star product when I get from those minimum my current salary.
Is that too much to ask?, I dont want to bet my family wellness, but need to multiply the impact in the time I have left.
so,
1. ask to work 3 days, get less money?
2. ask to work from home, free my time by getting trusty freelancer
Thanks !
all the best
