I live in a city in PA that is having a boom of sorts due to the increasing number of gas drilling companies coming into the area.

Anyone live in an area that has had this before and know of any businesses that seemed to flourish by catering to these people?

BOOM STAGE ONE – Welcome Visitor
1. Buy (cheaply) a hotel, rehap, and rent rooms to the newly hired help.

2. Open a restaurant next door to feed them. Make sure the menu has a free brochure in the middle – Welcom to BoomTown PA – your source for area deals and resources. The brochure will advertise the highlights of your region and you and your friends business venture and civic society’s that may be mutually beneficial.

3. Run a car lot next door so they have transportation. Fix the cars you sell at a reduced rate.

Bottom line – cater to a new residents’ temporary needs.

BOOM STAGE TWO – Vend the Trend

1. Rent apartments and houses. Sell lease options on the houses (some folks know they are only going to ‘roughneck’ for five years, raise a grubstake, and move on).

2. Support the sector. Is there a welding shop nearby? Who provides the drilling fluids (barium), concrete, PVC pipe. Who sells the tires for the equipment used and the cars that you sold?

You get the picture.

BOOM STAGE THREE – Maturation
Build the Rotary Club, Lions Club, RE Club etc. Become the ‘go to’ business venue in town to BUILD a COMMUNITY.

BOOM STAGE FOUR - GhostTown

Sell at the top!

If you need further resources, contact the BBB at Elko, Battle Mountain and Winnemucca in Nevada and towns in Mountrail County, and adjacent, on the Bakken in North Dakota.

Good Luck.

The abovey strategies are DIRECT connects. Another strategy is the indirect connect.

For example, buy stock in the firms that supply the vendors.

Today, Deere inc (NYSE😀E), a manufacturer of mining and agricultural equipment, jumped b.c. they raised their dividend by 17%. DE is making money b.c. the mining and agricultural sectors are making money.

Other firms such as Joy, 3M, etc - supply drilling equipment; you might look into them, and their competitors.

Max momo, how do you find manufacturers of a known product.

Eg. The manufacturers who help make the ipad/ipod touch?

GhostTown happens quick, very little warning. Always better be ready for it.

I do real estate in southwest PA. One of the trends that I've noticed is the landmen coming into the area. They seek out the vacant, unused land and research the gas and mineral rights at the court houses to find out who is on the title. Sometimes the title goes all the way back to England 1800's. They negotiate the sale/leasing rights for the gas companies and get paid a commission.
