I recently returned from a week's vacation to Hawaii and had a great time. I attended the church I used to go to but heard the church had some issues, personal and financial. I don't want this post to be a religious topic but you'll see the importance of this as I continue. To keep the church and its matter private I will not mention its name but want to point out some things that could happen in business since the church had become a business with its relationship to its members and other leaders in their community.
Background. The pastor and his wife influenced me a lot while I was there years ago. I still feel the same way now. The church was growing, attracting a lot of faithful members. The church attracted a lot of famous pastors who came to speak every once in a while. Also they had missions in southeast Asia and attracted followers throughout Hawaii. I would say their music ranked among the best contemporary religous groups. the pastor and his wife built the church from nothing over the past 20 years from a small group of 10 to close to 500 to 1000 members. They even had a team, some paid and some unpaid volunteers, to support the many tasks that goes along with a church growing and improving each day.
Current. On this trip however I heard the pastor mismamaged the church's funds. On top of that, many members left as I saw many new faces, the size of the church decreased almost in half, they occupied a different building that didn't have all of the bells and whistles. Some paid workers were not paid and continued to do their job while others left the church since their voices were ignored. The church had moved two times in the past 5-7 years and also recently renamed the church.
Assessment. The pastor and his wife built a powerful church from nothing. The church moved two times because it couldn't pay it's bills and ruined the relationship it built with current owners. Loyal workers left the church since the pastor ignored their advice. Other workers continue to stay even though they know there are issues that aren't being addressed.
To add to this, the pastor realized he made some mistakes. In his service he said in a football game, you go into the game and give it 100%. When you finish the game, you must also give it 100% in order to win. The same thing can be said of a business. You have to go into the business and give it 100% as well as when you finish the business (exit strategy).
