It might just be me, but it seems that being a software developer means that you are fighting an uphill battle with regard to being fastlane.
Here's how I see it. I've been developing software/services/websites etc for about 16 years now. My profile is consistently in the 5% of viewed profiles in linkedin. I would consider myself an accomplished developer.
Problem is, most of my domain knowledge relates to the nuts and bolts of software development. When I see a real need for a service or a site, its not a question of building a better mousetrap, that's the easy part. Its really getting around the I'll build my own mentality of people in the software industry.
So I figure to leverage my skill set I need to look outside the software industry, I find that I'm woefully unknowledgable about what people really need. Trying to build a vertical? What are the customer pain points? What feature are needed? What is the typical workflow? What are the highest costs? I surely don't know.
It really feels the software dev has been relegated to just being the hammer, but its the carpenter or architect who is getting into the fastlane.
Am I way off base on this? Is there an approach to really leverage what I do well into more than just a job?
