So, about the company I left...

A post of a ranting nature...

...I used to work in a Web Dev Shop. It was already falling apart,
but was struck by a massive wave of "WTF" when randomly visiting their website today and now am unshakably convinced that the stakeholders have dementia.

Just to give you an idea...

They have cats and dogs on their homepage,
irrespective to their branding and with no context to the words or copy in front of the images.

Cat.png

I can clearly imagine this scenario playing out in the office...

CTO: "We don't have enough sales."
CEO: "We have to get people to like our stuff. People like cats, right? Let's do cats. And Dogs. People like Dogs."

(Completely ignoring numerous other clearly detrimental problems in the business)

F**K.

So glad I'm out of there.

i actually really like that

I actually like it too. It immediately invokes feelings of warmth and trust.

Kinda reminds me of this Apple commercial:

I don't think any of those famous people knew they would be featured in a computer commercial.

Makes no logical sense, but the feels!

I give them points for being different. If they were pitching me and I saw their website, I would at least talk to them.

Ha ha.

Can't we make a thread "how the company I work is falling apart" ?

Right now we're sprinting towards bankruptcy and my overweight "boss" ordered airconditioning for the whole building. Because, yeah, it's easier to install airco in a broke company than to lose weight.

They hate my guts so much but it's too expensive to fire me (have to pay me 6 months up front).

When the company you work is turning into a comedy show, just lay back and enjoy.

Cats and dogs, as opposed to what? The usual luminescent wireframe globe on a blue-ish background?

I don't really see the problem. At least it's different.

And cats and dogs are cute and engage. There is ample evidence that faces (human, but also of pets) focus our attention. Plus, I notice how the two images have similar color tones. It suggests they were well chosen.

You are looking around for a web dev shop. You aren't a techie, and the search if F*cking confusing you. All this gibberish!
You have a ton of tabs open. You are fatigued, and you start barely looking at them.
All this blue, globes, techno neon backgrounds. All the same.

Then BAM, you got this cheeky looking cat looking at you, with warm color tones.
You crack a smile. You are immediately emotionally engaged with the company.

You feel like these people are trustworthy enough to contact them and ask questions.

The real WTF is that the text is hard to read. They should use an opaque mask under the text to make it easier to read.
This usability sin, on a web dev shop website, is a dealbreaker.

Yeah, I get that some people like the images.
It's also hard to compare to a previous images:

before-2.png before.png

When I saw cats and dogs, It was a feeling synonymous with it being April Fool's Day.
That's how out of character their branding is.

I just don't get how changing a website image takes precedence over, say,
performing an internal audit so our billing people are ACTUALLY charging enough.
But that's none of my business. This is a rant thread after all, haha.
