Should I Patent It / Does the market even care?

I have a product idea for a simple, physical product and have created a prototype for it. I've heard of provisional patents but not sure if they are still used or not. My understanding is that the patent field has recently changed and now the US patent office only supports those who are first to file - if you just record the idea and have it witnessed it doesn't really matter. Can someone with experience with patenting a product give advice on whether provisional patents are still being used, also how would I go about determining if the market would even care about the product before I bother with a patent? I don't want to sink funds into something which wouldn't be marketable.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Dave
