Hello fellow fastlaners,
I had a business idea for a snack food product with an unconventional twist that does not exist on the market yet and that I thought had a clear USP. So I started experimenting in my kitchen and developed many prototypes. I am still trying to find the perfect recipe. I am currently doing an internship at a company that sells bakery products and they could easily develop and produce my product if they wanted to. I will finish university next month and my internship in February, so I will start working on my business idea with 100% commitment in March. I have been accepted into an Idea-Booster Challenge where I will be able to live in a house for free for 100 days and work on my idea. The funny thing is: I am currently sitting in the product development department of the company, but I have not told them anything about my plans yet. (They still think I am going to study food science next year haha) But I am not sure if I should tell them. I suppose the chances of them investing time and money in this idea are pretty slim as it doesn't fit their product profile. But it exists and it threatens me. Besides, they (and others) will find out eventually anyway, so why bother? And there is even a chance that my idea is BS and nobody wants it anyway, so why make such a fuss? Still, I feel I should be careful. The upside of telling them, of course, is that if they don't decide to go ahead with the idea themselves, they would probably be happy to help me out with a lot of the expertise I might need. However, they are not the only food scientists on the planet and not really the people I would want to work with in a start-up, I guess.
What would you do in my situation? What do you think about sharing ideas in general? I think I remember reading this in a business book once: "If you think you have a great idea and you are already working in a company that could implement it, you should go to the boss and try to convince him only find out that nobody gives a s#hit about your idea."
However this is not the way it works I think. At least not in the company I work in. They even have an innovation-tool where employees can write down their ideas and some of them (an edible spoon for example) have already been implemented...
Looking forward to your takes on this.
