If you can learn anything from the recent domestic abuse scandals involving multiple professional athletes, it's this: Doing the right thing sometimes isn't the most profitable, popular, or easiest thing to do.
When the Minnesota Vikings originally planned to let Adrian Peterson to play, what they essentially were saying was this: "We like money. We like winning. While we don't condone domestic abuse and want to defend children, we will only do so when it's convenient to our pocketbook. Money defines our character." The NFL's stance was similar. As was the Baltimore Raven's.
If AP was #53 on the roster, or some practice squad player, he would been cut immediately. Why? No impact to the wallet. But the fact that he is #1 on the roster, the franchise player, the Vikings will overlook any transgressions (not forgetting Ray Rice either) simply because it impacts a bottomline. "Due process" is code for "lets let this dangle in the justice system for 10 months so we can still earn $$$."
It was only when sponsors (MONEY) started to back out of their contracts with the Vikings did they DO they right thing. In other words, the led with their pocketbook and not with their heart. Only when the consequences where brought to light, e.i keeping AP will cost us more than not keeping him, was he deactivated.
I bring this up because more than likely at some point in time, you will also face this moral dilemma... the dilemma of morals (or ethics) over money.
There will be a time in your life or business where you will be faced with a hard situation... a situation that conflicts with your heart and soul. A situation where action, or deciding, will be hard on your pocketbook or hard on something else in your life. Perhaps, it will be hard for loyal fans. Perhaps, it will be hard for others to accept or understand. And still others, they will deem your decision as unpopular as they remain ignorant to the circumstances that created the decision, such as clear photos of a child with scarred lacerations, or a grainy elevator video.
The takeaway is this: It is within these moral dilemmas where your character is defined. Will you justify your actions (or lack of actions) because of money sits atop of your value chain? Or does integrity win the day?
I hope none of you face a similar decision in your life. And when you do, I hope you choose wisely.
Something to think about...
